    Funny brakes, fixed by provent...

For those of you who pay attention... no wait Ive done that line already..

as part of the provent fitout thing Im doing I needed to work on the alternator, part of the reason I chose this is becuase Ive had a funny noise coming from the alternator area of the engine and a wierd problem with the brakes occassionaly Id get variable vacume assist on the brakes.

hands up everyone whose thinking dying vacume pump on the alternator. I was.

The noise was a small leaf on a twig that was rubbing the inside of the pully and the vac pump worked perfectly... so I was lost the brake problems I was having lead me to believe that it had to be the pump and was thinking more along the lines of having to do the brake booster

when I drove out of the workshop after pulling the vac actuators as part of the prep work I hit the brakes and nearly went through the windshield...

When I got home I tested the actuators on an improvised vac pump made from a brake bleeder and sure enough one of them was leaking and pretty badly.

as I a side point Im wondering how many EGR problems are being caused by an actuator going funny...

1 more to add to the TD5 problem file.....

Good find Dave, is it the same on Disco's as a mate of mine is having similar problems with his 2001 D2.

Would be great to rock up and fix it for him so I can bag him out for his "Ive got all the 4wd stuff but dont want to scratch it" 4wd

He bags out my antiquated D1 all the time so it is only fair

its different but the same... the EU3 has 2 actuators that can leak the pre EU3 only one. (big red is an EU3 spec 02) I cant see them being too far away from where they are in a deefer in the discovery, to isolate them just make up a 1/8th inch blanking hose and fit that in place of the vac t piece on the main vac line to the booster.
