Mine is also stiff to open Nathan. It was on the vehicle when I got it (8 months ago), So I doubt it will get better.
LRHybrid100's has greaseable joints on his which is a lot easier to open.
Hi Guys,
I finally got sick of listening to the back door rattle around and decided to fit a Bearmach wheel carrier. Seems to work pretty well and was reasonably straight forward to fit - for a guy with basic tools and no garage!
The only thing I've noticed is the carrier is quite stiff to open and close. Has anyone else found this? Will it loosen up over time?
Thanks,
Nathan

I am soon to install the same carrier to my Defender.
Is it a problem as the whole idea of this carrier was not only to save the door from self destructing but to be able to easily open the door without having to separately swing away a wheel and carrier.
Can the greasable nipples be fitted to the Bearmach one or was the one mentioned a different type?
Thanks
the bearmach ones without the nipples have a neoprene type bush, so grease isnt necessary, but, i greased the threw bolts on mine with rubber grease when i fitted it.
you can fit nipples but without drilling a hole threw the bush to the pin/bolt the grease will just come out the bottom.
also try loosining off the nyloc nuts abit.
cheers phil
Well I fitted the wheel carrier and I agree that it doesn't make the door a little stiffer.
If anyone else is installing this type of carrier I suggest you have a mate over just because it is a pain trying to do up bolts and buts around the rear door. My arms just aren't long enough!
If you don't get the brackets plumb you will have all sorts of problems. It just will not open properly and the carrier hinges will bind with racking.
On my first attempt I didn't quite get it right so the following day I fixed it. Out by about 8mm which made a heck of a difference. This meant that I had to re-drill the door connector bracket which now means I have to weld up the old holes :-(
Its a shame the top and bottom carrier brackets aren't the same size as then you could just measure from the door frame out the same amount and drill the needed holes. There is also a pop rivet right in the way of the top bracket that you need to make clearance for.
Also the bottom bracket IMO needs to have a bend put in it, as the rear cross member is set in from the body. At least on my vehicle. I had to make up a 6mm spacer so that the carrier was vertical.
I intend to tweak it just a little more to try and get it spot on but at the moment it works fine and I am not concerned about my door being destroyed on corrugations anymore.
theres on of these on ebay, worth getting??
Loosen off the top and bottom bolts on the bushes of the carrier a smidge and you will probably find it makes a big difference.
