Noisy fuel pump TD5
Righto. So I put a new fuel pump in the disco td5 and it made all the difference to the power problem. But it is very noisy,if you stand at the front of the car while it is running it sounds like the thermo fans are on. Thats noisy !
The next thing that has happened is the fuel gauge is starting to read very low, so I filled up , thinking I was nearly empty. Only put in half tank cause it was full at that. Fuel gauge showed very full at first but went into free fall over the next 50 ks should show full still but is on half a tank now.
Rang supplier ( LR specialist ) and got no joy on what it was so I put it to you.
Do I check instalation ?
Do I fiddle with the fuel level float ?
Or do I just get a replacement pump ?

Are the wires on the sender properly and clean?
I wouldn't play with the float level.
Hmmm, the whole pump sounds dodgy to me. It's such a pain to get the pump out though.
Cheers

recon u have got the wrong pump......or one that was a dud.

if u can hear it at the front of the car that is bloody noisy
i would pull it out & check it against the old one look carefully at the length as well.....as the float could be in a different position causing guage to be inaccurate
i would use a genuine one......but it is nice to keep costs down.....i hate doing jobs like this twice particularly if it is not your fault
years ago we used to run a fleet of xf panel vans& ford had a problem with the sender unit for the fuel guage, which was attatched to the fuel pick up tube.they (the dealer) would on occasions instal the wrong one ,from a sedan or wagon & it would be a lot shorter...took us a while to work this one out....you could have a similar problem
cheers

Yep I checked the pump thoroughly before installing it. Didn't have a lot of faith that I had the correct one ( for reasons I won't go into) and it seemed to be exactly the same as the one I was removing.
The fuel gauge was spot on for about two days then it sudenly had brain fade.
Went from 3/4 of a tank to 1/2 in about 50 meters.
I thought I had sprung a leak so I stopped and checked.
Not leaking , not even a sniff of fuel.
I did wonder if there was a pad that the bottom of the pump that it was supposed to sit on to help insulate the noise and I had moved it out of place in the process of fitting the pump assembly.
Supplier seems happy to replace if its dodgy but they are having a few staffing issues at the moment so dealing with them is interesting.

Right ho
The supplier of my fuel pump has sent me a new one.
Installed it today, well how about that !! no noise !! can't even her it running with the motor going.
The new pump was slightly different to the other new one in appearance but it works a lot better.
Worth all the effort to get another one.
