    TD5 wont start

    Hi Guys

Boss has a 2004 TD5 with 50k k's on it, friday night it wouldnt start, would turn over and after about 10 seconds it gave a dashboard light show.

he left it overnight, then tried again, still no joy same thing.

i have had a similar thing on mine but normally arming the alarm and unarming solves it...

any ideas what it could be? as its in at barbagellos... so could turn into an expensive diagnostics session.....

    Thanks

    Steve

Couple of easy things to try...
Check the battery voltage. If the battery falls bellow about 11.5V you can have trouble starting. Also if the terminals aren't making good contact this can be the same result.
Is the "water" sensor light coming on on the dash. If so drain the fuel filter (just in case) and disconnect the sensor.

dont know about the water filter light... how does that effect things?

The turnover speed was higher than normal (as mine sounded when it wouldnt start) so the assumption is that the battery is ok..

    Thanks

Also check that the dash is displaying that the transmission is in P and not blank.

I had exactly the same problem with my TD5. it sat idle for a month as a result. each time I tried to start it the lights would flash like christmas and noises would come from the computer like there were two rats fighting.

At the end of the day I tried everything from disconnecting batteries, fiddling with the duel battery system, all non-essential lights and power drains, re-charging the batteried etc etc,, and then one day I roll started it and have not had a problem since then.

i think, as someone said before, there was a battery issue with my duel system screwing with the computer. It was still a mystery because my fridge has drained my second battery on many occasions.

If it still wont start, roll start it and it will fire no worries. THen go on a nice long drive and it should all settle down.

    Landrover electrical gremlins.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for that Jimmy. did yours actually turnover?

Barbaggello's reckon its the computer crapped itself? and not outputting to the injectors. what are the chances of this, i cant remember seeing any posts regarding this? or hearing about one failing?

cost for replacement $1600 and will have one tomorrow?

opinions? is this realistic? and is the price about right? or could it be something else? im a bit sceptical of dealers...

    Thanks

i know your frustration - mine turns over but does'nt fire, and can take longer or shorter to fire up - there's no pattern. Had the crank angle sensor replaced (service guy recommended and executed) and bottom half of wiring loom, but no improvement. Drives me insane, but then sometimes fires up as soon as the key's turned???
Sorry i don't have advice for you - merely letting you know you're not alone..... and watching this thread with interest

DId he try and jump it, or a new/different battery. (What dm_td5 was onto).

I had a similar experience, but it was just the battery was dead.
Would crank over, but not start.
Charge the battery (would say it was "fully charged", but just it was just too old).
A jump would sort it, and of course runnning around charges it up, but it would eventually die again.

Got a new one from Super Charge Batteries this morning 950 CCA "gold" for $160. They still do discounts for aulro
