Thread: Disco click noise

First thing I'd check is the propshafts. Check fixing bolts, UJs and sliding joints. Grease where necessary. These are the easiest and cheapest things that go wrong.
If that doesn't solve it, you can move on to A-frame ball-joint, and wear in transmission, rear axles, and front CVs. Any problems here will cost fairly big dollars.

Ok, well I did the rear uni's not long ago and there is no play there.

I dont think its the cv because it makes the noise when im going straight, on braking and take off, but only make the noise once. it mainly seems to be when the axles get sideways pressure, like 4wding on sideslope then changing all the weight to the other side of the axle. If you get what i mean?

Could also be coils moving around then - seating / unseating.

Why not try the easy fix first and see if your Panhard rod bolts are tight and the bushes OK, visually and with a big screwdriver.
Then tighten the bolts of the four mounts under the axle.
Correct torque is just before hernia with 2 -3 foot bar.

hmmmm, think i better get under there and just torque everything up and see if it is still happening.

I probably should be putting a heavier duty ball joint in anyway though, with the suspension lift and longer travel shocks etc.

Im guessing its not going to suddenly fail if i dont fix it before i go out 4wding next weekend, hopefully just get worse and worse and then fail!

Check the front propshaft at the transfer case.

I have almost the same clunk in our Disco. Anything which flexes the suspension significantly more than road driving gets it going. Clunks with a right turn, and then clunks back under brakes, and I can feel it through the footwell just below the pedals. Only does it once in each direction, but eventually it seems to settle for road driving and there it stops until next off road venture.

It's done it since we bought it and it has annoyed me to varying degrees over the three years we've had it. But it has not become any worse.

I plan to investigate it thoroughly soon - have another gearbox and transfer to put in, new wheel and diff bearings on the way, and I'll have the swivels and CVs out at that time for inspection.
