    Boge leveller replacement, D3 strut?

I have been thinking about replacing the boge leveller on the county with something else. I saw the thread about D3 shock absorbers and though if you got one with a dead shocky and put it in place of the strut it could work. The air bag allowing load levelling. Now I don't know much about the D3 strut and if, the crucial part, old ones could be cheap to get. Do they have to replace the whole thing when the shocky inside wears out (i don't need any shock absorbing).
I haven't done any investigation into the lenghts and strokes required, but if any one knows, either for the boge or the D3 strut let me know.
It would need to carry up to about 800kg so a d3 strut should be up to that.
Maybe there is other vehicles that have a suitable air strut?
Does anyone know what load a monroe gas riser shock can carry?
As you can tell i am just looking for info at the moment.

    Cheers.

Sounds like a good idea, have been wondering what to do when my current Boge fails. Only issue I see is that the boge is fairly short stroke and requires quite a lot of force to get it to move
I have a worn out Boge unit here that I can get the stroke dimensions from, and will post them tomorrow, if I remember.
How are you planning on mounting a replacement?
    Cheers

    Hi Woven,

I've seen a thread on this with photos. A stock Mazda 323 front strut is a fit from memory. The guy that did it was mucking around with different springs.
In South America somewhere. Can't find the link.

My boge is in the bin, if you have heavier rear springs or a lift then you will find that your boge unit isn't doing what its supposed to anyway and is of no use.

I dont know about that, I've heard lots of people say the same, I run about 5.5" rear bump stop clearance and the boge still works fine. Usually if the car sits for a while it sags in the rear and pumps itself up while driving or just bouncing the the back end a bit. I also use fairly soft springs, so maybe thats why it works or I haven't got enough lift

Thats the thing the county has original rear springs and I like them just the way they are, but now it sits down in the back end and doesn't pump up.
How did you go with the measuring the travel of your old one Vern?
The shorter the travel the easier it will be to find a strut that will work.
I was going to change the ends to fit the ball joint sockets.

    Cheers all,

I didn't bother measuring it i just chucked it out, i run 270pd rear springs with around 6.5-7" bump stop clearance. So from the research i did and advice from the experts i was told that it wouldn't be working and limiting travel so out it came. Oh and it did drive/handle better with out it aswell.

I should read more carefully. Sorry Vern.
It was Waxen who was going to measure the travel. How did you go?

    In response to Vern,

not nit picking but the general consensus is that the Boge does nothing after about a 2 " spring lift. I had a 2" lift and no Boge, then had new body on same chassis and put Boge in. Made a difference.

I've only got about 100mm - 130mm bumpstop clearance at the back and have very stiff springs and I think the Boge still compensates for extra weight.

Vern, you have more bumpstop clearance and have noticed worse handling (more roll?). Maybe the Boge was still working with even more lift than me.

Comments on this would be good.

(I'm really only leaving the Boge in to keep the HID's half legal)

    cheers.

Handled better without it. Actually the back end felt really good considering the lift and 35's. Yeah it does roll around abit, but its not built for handling is it.

    Bump stop clearances are f - 130mm, r - 165+
