    Gauge for aux fuel tank

Want to install additional fuel tanks to my Td5.

Plan is to use the one fuel gauge only with a switch to change between the aux and standard tanks. Is this possible, do I need a special relais or do I need another fuel gauge?

    Cheers,
    Daniel

I am not familiar with the TD5 setup, but I understand that it has an in-tank fuel pump, so you would need one of them as well. As with any diesel there is also a return fuel line to consider, with the need for this to be switched as well (there are other ways round it).

As far as the gauge goes, I can see no reason why you could not use an identical tank sender and a two way switch (you may want to have additional poles on it to switch the low fuel warning light and fuel pump as well, but you need to know whether this will interfer with any ECU functions.

Alternatively there is no reason for not using a completely separate gauge system, which then need not be identical to the existing one. (This is what I have, but it is not a TD5)

I have an LRA sill tank on my Defender ('95) and the original fuel gauge can be switched to read either. It uses a relay, i did work out the circuit many years ago but not sure if I've still got the details.
On mine the fuel is lifted from the sill tank into the main tank.

I've got 2 sill tanks in my 90 Rangie, each has got a Bosch sender in it. I got 2 LRA LED gauges which incorporate a pump switch as well, I think about $70 each. The guages are small round things with some green LEDs that indicate level and turn red when it gets low. In my set up both sill tanks feed into the 110 litre main tank via 2 VL Commodore pumps. So all you do when your main tank is getting low is press the pump switch and watch the LEDs go down until they start flashing and then turn off. Seems to work well
