Initial service on new engine - not needed any more?

My TD4 110 has just got to 3,000Km, so thought I'd read the manual about when to do the "break-in" service on it. I was expecting something like 3,000 or 5,000Kms for an initial oil change, but nothing in the service manual about this.

Do new vehicles just go straight into the 10,000Km service cycle these days? Am I reading the wrong manual?

thats right. Some of the td5 discos first service was at 20 thousand k's.i think synthetic fluids are the key to this.....and better build quality(hopefully)

    ummm....also cost cutting

Nothing to do with cost cutting..

BMW have enough onboard diagnostics etc that they tell you when they need servicing.

My Manager had his 2 years and it was never serviced.. That was over 80,000km...

Modern lubricants etc are the key.

it would be interesting to know how bmw determine that the engine oil needs changing, for example,....maybe the onboard diagnostics calculate this from duty cycles, running times, mileage, temperatures, etc

i pressume the oil levels & other fluid levels would be monitored electronically as some poeple never look under the bonnet.

its amazing to think the bonnet may not get opened for years
