Question Where are my pitman arms?

    Spot the newbie,
Apparently I have slight ware in my pitman arm ball joint.
I looked all through my Haynes manual and could not find any reference to them in there. Do they go by a different name?
Should I be worried that they are slightly worn?
Should I start saving now so I can afford to replace them?

    I drive a 1998, disco, D1, V8i

The pitman arm is the drop arm on the bottom of the steering box. so the balljoint they are referring to is the one that connects to this on the end of the drag link. If it is worn you may notice that the steering is a bit vague & the car will wonder all over the road.

It is the short arm at the very bottom of the steering box that joins the steering box to the steering tie rod that goes from the inside of front wheel to the opposite wheel on the other side, simply put, welcome to the Forum, Regards frank.

About $40 for a ball joint, from memory. As for replacement - Depends on how worn it is!

    Be careful.

You haven't said what the issues are, and I'm just guessing what they might be. But if the person who diagnosed the problem is not experienced with rovers they may have missed other more likely causes.

If they can obviously find slack in the ball joint, then ignore what I said.

If the disco has had a reasonable life, In my experience I would expect much more life from that joint in a disco of that year model.

Thank you for the help. It looks like I'll be renewing some front suspension bushes in the near future.
I like the idea of taking everything off and giving it all to someone else to press the bushes in and out.

Don't know about your Pitman arms,
but I do know where my 'Man Arm Pits' are.

Yes, a tie rod end. But these are just generic terms and ball joint is acceptable to me.
