Thread: 1991 Rangie. BAD Engine knock.

    Hi Luv,
Never been over heated and was running like a dream until this knocking occurred.
The Rockers were really bad, like totally had it and had to be replaced but the cam and Lifters were like new.
We replaced them regardless but the knock was still there, just as loud as ever, and it's really load, like a stuck lifter or a Big end that has gone way to far into the shell.
Like I told Mike, I can start it and it knocks a bit when cold but it is not very loud.
Whe the engine is hot, and I give the thrittle a couple of quick blips, it starts to clatter, just like a loss of oil pressure somewhere but the indicator light stays off.
    Cheers,
    Shirley.....

Its hard to diagnose from a distance but a Bigend and a tappet sound very different even on an alloy V8
    I wish I could help
To be honest it sound like a liner

If you had a bad oil gallery to lifter // then it would be noisy at startup (already collapsed)

    I'm thinking gudgen pin

(as they ....stretch... when heated (gets longer) and gets a better hit on the head)

As "djam1 said" ... rare for a gudgen pin to go

I am thinking outside the square here but what about the cam hitting the timing cover? As there were some bolts that had nylon caps on the cam gear for this as a mod.
I too have had a slipped liner after I rebuilt a 3.5 and bored it 20 thou.It only did 20k before the noise started loud knocking noise which came and went as it pleased mainly when cold if I remember.

    Thanks Duane,
I am taking it back in the morning to have the old lifters checked and refitted as they are showing no visible signs of damage.
    A very big thanks,
    Shirley.......

    Hi Duane,
A little more detail if possible? I don't quite understand, or at least I am not too sure.
    Regards,
    Shirl.....

My old man has the same problem.

He bought a "re-con" 3.5 motor from a "reputable" LR wrecker in Adelaide that "has just had $5000 spent on it".

Anyhow, after finally getting the thing to run, It's got this same knocking sound, that sounds like noisy lifters.

We opened her up somewhat a few weeks back, to find a new looking cam, dished (worn) lifters - which we cleaned up, lips on the cylinder tops, and a thin webbed block to boot.

    $5000 my a$$.

The sound does fade when the engine warms up, but will only disappear with a timing adjustment.

With the timing set to remove the noise, the engine is absolutely gutless.

Bring back the power, and the noise follows.

She has been run warm, not losing coolant or oil (excluding the obligatory leaks), and the temp gauge spikes occasionally, but drops again quickly. Thermostat has been replaced a few times now too.

    Really weird.

    G`day Shirl

If you haven`t , use a straight edge across the lifter base and hold it to the light .

Concave , worn out , flat , worn but still usable , convex , how they come new .

    Cheers
