I would be wary of just taking it back and getting them to put the old lifters back.
Each of the 16 lifters would of worn in a unique way ie they have bedded into the cam lobe that they were fitted on if you just take it back and get them to refit them it would be unlikely that they will put them back in the position that they were in.
I see your post on Holden lifters, I understand you can get away with using Holden lifters in these engines but I have also been warned by so called experts not to do it.
I would be getting the vehicle to someone who knows Rover V8s not just heard of them and asking them for an opinion.
If its a slipped liner you dont want to spend another dime on it.
How many Ks has it done. A good cheap 3.9 can be had for not much more than you have already spent

I think you need the advice of a specialist in Rover engines to cut all the speculation and crap that is probably stressing you out at the moment

    Definitely a knock.
Surely noone in their right mind would gring one Bigend journal because tha knock is definitely louder under load or accelleration as would be the case with a Big End.
Not having done the job myself, I cannot be sure that the mechanic gauged every slipper when he fitted them either.. How much attention did he pay to checking the conrod / Gudgeon movement or for that matter the piston skirts by pulling each piston down to the bottom of the bores and having a good look. It's all unknown to me.
I will give richard a ring this morning and see if he can shine any light on the fault as a lot of the parts came from All 4X4 Spares, Just not happy about the Holden Lifters that were put in instead of genuine rover ones.
Back to square one I fear.

    I agree Duane,
I wish he had have left the lifters alone, it may be the start of another nightmare.
I am looking for a good low K motor or even a wreck that's been rolled but have not yet found any leads that would give me what I am looking for.
The Truck is so clean and tidy with do damage anywhere, otherwise I would just trade it in, wreck it and get another unit. God it's hard on a pension.
    Thanks Heaps Luv,
    Shirley....

Ive been getting mixed messages here

    You are now running gas

(Did this noise come in after you flipped from petrol to gas or vi-versa)

"The noise comes in under load"

Shirl ... are you sure it's not a case of pinging or a rattle (when under load) ....
as you keep saying it's all around the top of head

The timing of dizzy might be out or not set right .... if so // Good news

    Check the timing

Mate, I've got an injected 3.5 with the computer and all from a rollover for$300 if you want it. Pick up from Nowra, approx 2 1/2 hrs south of sydney.
This is out of a 1991 Disco, already pulled from the vehicle.

Shirley, call Murray at Jag and Rover Spares in Kelvin Grove in Brisbane. He imports cars and wrecks and quite often has a few in stock, prices vary pending on the number of kms they've done. Outlaw from the GCLRO bought one from him recently

Shirley, I see you live at Wyee.
If you like you can bring it down to Avoca and I will have a look at it or should I say listen to it.
One thing you should look at is if all the exhaust gaskets are in position. If one is not tightened it can make a noise that can be mistaken for a knock.
The Holden lifters should be OK.
PM me and I will give you my contact details and if you want discuss suitable times.
I am not a mechanic but I do all my own work and have rebuilt a V8 and done lots of lesser things.
    Regards Philip A

Ditto on the exhaust gaskets. I had this on my 3.9
    I thought I had a big problem, only a $10 gasket

    Hi Duane,
I wanted to get the old lifters back mainly to just see how bad the wear was on them or if they were worn at all.. The only parts I have sighted so far have been the Rockers and yes, they were stuffed! I have never seen such damage.
Three of the pushrod seats had actually cut through the top and you could look through the seat....
    Cheers,
    Shirley.......
