When I replaced my composite gasket the plastic bits were shredded off on the upper side (outside) but the inside was fine.
I think I paid about $35 for the new composite gasket from Rick's. Plus extra for the rubber ends.

It took me a few days to do mine (as I buggered the timing up doing something else at the same time) and that is on a 3.9 injected engine. Would be much less than half a day now that I know what I'm doing.
This was the first time I'd ever worked on the engine (or any V8) and mine is still ok so I think you would be mad for paying $1000 for it.

For $1000 you could buy all the parts and the best quality tools to do the job with and still came away much better off.

British4wd has always done good by me.

    Tin gaskets are about $30.00
Rubber ends were $10 each, from memory.
Just need to add a little air freight.
Great guys to deal with too.

Thanks guys - much appreciated - I did change the head on my HZ years ago when I was a poor student, so might have a crack.

Thanks again, and no doubt will have some 'urgent' questions during the procedure.
