    discovery II rear wheel bearings

Hi after trying to track down a clunking noise in the rear have found the right hand rear wheel has a bit of movement which would explain the return of the three amigoes as well.

I seem to remember reading that instead of replacing the whole hub assembly it is possible to remove the bearings and fit new ones, is this correct?? and has any one done it and if so what are the numbers?? will look at doing it next time I am working night shift.

If any one has an old hub with stuffed bearings in the brisbane area they do not need that could be pulled to bits for research and post a how to rebuild in the project forum $500 is a bit much when around $100 might do the trick

What sort of movement? There was an issue of the hub moving on the axle and causing a clicking noise. The fix is to remove axle, clean the splines and apply Loctite.

re the bearings, there was a thread on here recently. I think Redback said the bearing race is part of the hub, not a separate item.

D2 hubs are different to the P38a even though they appear to be the same, only the outer bearing could be replacable (they have 2, inner & outer) although i haven't heard of anyone trying to do it. My opinion is that, if you can only replace one, what would be the point and besides what happens if it's the inner bearing that's faulty

    So it's a full replacement i'm afraid

Ring a dealer you may be surprised

    Then ring an aftermarket supplier.

It's another reason I like the D1 (and Defender) for off-road. The bearings are cheap and can be replaced anywhere.

it is the bearing may buy a new hub then try to pull the old one to bits in the name of research and see if it can be done

So on my D2 if I've got a leak (which I have got) contaminating my inner brake pads, it is not just a simple task of replacing a hub seal like in days of old (D1). I'm not familiar with the D2 layout and haven't had time to have a good look but it's nice to be prepared.
    Cheers,
    Anthony.

Ask Scouse about leaking D2 hub bearings. I'm not sure if it's a warrantable item.

Having said that, no, I think the seal is in the bearing so the whole lot needs changing.

I was given a set of D2 hubs I plan to use on a trailer (to match my P38A wheels). They are leaking grease and that's why they were changed. I wonder if I can fit a grease nipple to them somehow.
