    turning a prop shaft

    How do you turn a prop shaft by hand to get access to its grease nipples?

    You grab it then turn it









    After you've jacked up a wheel on the diff with the corresponding shaft and put the transmission/gearbox in neutral, better yet, put the transfer case in neutral, will make it a little easier to turn

    Or just roll the car along the ground

    So lift a wheel up with everything in neutral....And start tracking down that rear end clunk.

    That's it, but if its a clunk, I;d hazard a guess and say it won't just be a dry uni

    Im hoping bushes in the A-frame.

    Worse case maybe worn splines on the axles. Kinda thinking that if I need to put new axles in (HD ones obviously) I may aswell fit a locker at the same time. Yes, I feel much better.

    Yeah... Just jack up one of the wheels (which will vary depending on the prop you're doing...).

    Just remember to chock the other wheels to stop the thing rolling away.

    Oh no, it's okay, the wheels won't roll away, they're still bolted on.

    just get under the car with it in gear or handbrake on with all wheels still on the ground, get in a good spot to check the a-frame, then get someone to rock the car backwards and forwards, if your a-frame ball joint, bushes or trailing arm bushes are flogged out you should notice the movement pretty easily, you may have to feel the bushes out a bit to work out where its coming from exactly, otherwise could be play in the diff., been through all this with my county recently its the ball joint in mine thats flogged out.
