    Discovery 95 Vibration

The Discovery has been sitting mostly idle for a while now.

When I drive it now it has a vibration when accelerating. When I lift my foot off the vibration stops.

I am going to rotate the tyres first (due anyway - and all on the same pressure), then try it and the remove the front prop shaft to see if that is causing it.

What should I try after that?

If it is the front shaft causing it will it hurt it if I leave the front shaft off and lock the CDL for a week or two?

It is an Auto with 2" lift and mud tyres.

    Thanks
    Andrew

Hi Andrew (long time no see )

Might be the uni joints try disconnecting the prop shafts alternately.

It was a symptom of vibrations on mine until I bothered to check it out. The front prop shaft Uni bearings were buggered.

    Andrew,

My 97 is doing the same thing.
I think it is time to change the rubber "Donut" uni joit at the rear

    Cheers,

I had a similar issue with my 95 discovery. I chased this through both tailshafts, removed each individually and drove it with the CDL engaged, replaced the donut on someone's advise, wasn't it. Replaced the tie rod ends which needed it, the steering damper which also needed it. Still there although more subtle due to the steering damper.

Now onto the swivel hub preload to see if this improves the issue.

If it vibrates under acceleration but not when coasting then the rear driveshaft rubber donut will do that. However if it didn't do it before you parked it up and does now then it probably isn't that. Easy to check though (cracks/distortion etc). Maybe the rubber perished over time?

My money would be on the uni joints. Try greasing them and see if anything changes. Maybe remove the drive shafts and check for play/stiffness in the joints.

When my swivel hub bearings went they started making noise on cornering. There was no discernable vibration, but I can see how they might.

I replaced the donut fairly recently (I think about 3-5000k's ago) Ithink it was starting to vibrate then and this mostly fixed it. I will remove the rear shaft first and then make sure it is on good and tight.

At the time I think I regreased and checked the uni's and they seemed OK on the car - no discernable play etc.

I will try with both prop shafts disconnected and see what happens.

I will need to drive it a bit this week as I am changing jobs and won't have a company car this week. Maybe I should have thought of that before

I will take it for a drive up to about 100km/h on Sunday and see how it goes. It has only been doing short trips to the tip etc for the last few months.

Mahn how long was yours vibrating for - I am guessing then it will only be an annoyance and hopefully that it won't hurt anything else

    Thanks
    Andrew

Drop your rear shaft and enguage the CDL.

Take it for a drive and see if it is still there.

If still there then repeat the process with the front.

Sounds to me like uni or donut...

Edit : It will be the Donut, 2" lift and goes 4wding is a recipe for donut destruction.

Did mine last weekend but I carry a spare and Im going to do the Rangie shaft and flange conversion shortly.

I suggest you do the same, there is plenty of info on here Pictures of a Uni joint conversion

I missed the bit about 2" lift.
That sure would put strain on a rubber donut.
BTW, Towing a caravan also buggers a donut, so I've discovered

It is the front uni on the front shaft.

I will try and drop it in and get it fixed the first day I have to drive it - Wednesday.

The front shaft is off at the moment.

Will it hurt it driving at 90-100kmh for about 60k's with the front shaft disconnected with the CDL locked?

    Thanks
    Andrew
