Fast Front Vibration at 90 to 100 - 91 Classic.

    Hi Guys,
It seems that anything made by landrover develops a fine and fast vibration at about 90 KPH upwards, especially when not under load.
Either put the foot down or take it off and the vibration ceases.
I check the universals front and rear on both shafts, both slip joints and all are quite tight with no sign of movement anywhere.
What I fear is either the CV joints or even a dodgy tyre.
It seems that tyre services have difficulty fitting Michellin Tyres to Genuine alloy rims on the Rangies and some of the Discos.
Maybe someone can shine some light on this annoying little fault.

    Cheers fellas,
    Shirley....

    Hi Shirl
I take it that you "broke the engine in" and all is OK
Vibrations at 90 plus K's ..... How old are the tyres??

Front< rear or whole car. Is it still there if you drop down 1 cog and ease power back on.

Well I had a friend with a vibration that nobody could diagnose.
It turned out to be the under axle bushes were stuffed and the axle was rotating on load vs no load.

It also depends how high the car is. I had one once that only happened on Righthand curves. The front prop angle just got too much and the RH spring then resonated. A bit of plastic tube over the spring damped the resonance. Thats why the big weight is under the diff on later cars.
If you have lifted the front, or removed the weight, lowering it and replacing the weight will help.
If you have greased an earlier model slip joint, you can put too much in and it collects in the bellows and unbalances the shaft.

Ahhh... This is one of those really annoying things to try & diagnose as there are so many things it could be as well as possibly being a combination of several things.

One thing that often gets overlooked is the pre-load on the swivels.

    Good luck.

Truck is still NFG and goes mack in for a change of lifters.
I bit the bullet and bought a new set of RR Lifters and will get Gossie to pull the blasted Holden ones out and put them in his Holden, so to speak.....
If that doesn't work, it get a new motor! I have had enough......

    Hi Phillip,
Axle bushes could be suspect and you could have something with the grease prob.
There are so many things that can cause such a prob, I might take the prop shaft off first and see what happens, stip it and put new uni's in, clean out all the old grease from inside the slip joint and then refit it.
I bet it's will be the axle bushes..... Know my luck...
    Cheers,

Now that is something I never would have considered....
Next - How to adjust the preload and how much to give it?
    Back to the books, hey?

    Thanks Luv,
    Shirley..... Much appreciated.
