    Shaking vehicle

    Hi all,
    my 110 continues to show some unacceptable behaviour. Between a speed of 80-90 kms/hr the car is shaking and the steering wheel is wobbling as if there is an imbalance in the wheels, which cannot be the cause as rebalancing did not change anything.
    The symptoms occur rather frequently but not always when reaching the speed band, and are worse when driving straight on, turning the wheel either side brings a marked improvement, as does driving faster or slower.
    The ball joints seem allright. Any suggestions about what to do next???

    A damper problem ??

    Check out the steering damper your discription sounds very much like it is bugggered , They cost about $75 to replace and about ten minutes of your time.

    Should have said that I checked it first instance and found no visible damage, but a replacement, of course, will be the next step. Will let you know if it cured the problem.

    The most common (but not only) cause for this sort of problem is inadequate preload on the swivels. Any free play on any of the front suspension bushes can also contribute, although these usually show up as wandering steering first.

    As John said, swivel pre-load is one contributor, panhard rod bushes or any of the front end bushes, and also wheel balance.
    I know you said yours are balanced, but there is balanced, and there is balanced. I don't know how many times I've had freshly balanced wheels that wobbled like all get out. I had one set on a vehicle that shimmied so badly when i hit the brakes they nearly threw me out the window and they'd been re-balanced innumerable times, yet it was a wheel re-balance that fixed the problem....

    A half dead front shock absorber will also do this. Had this happen on the Defender.

    Could a bent, dented or out of balance driveshaft cause similar problems?

    Vibration from the prop shafts will be much higher frequency than the original post seems to imply (usually described as vibration rather than shaking, for example)- easily distinguished by a test drive, which is rather difficult to do over the internet.

    I don't think it would be the steering dampner because we took ours off the county to change the rubbers and it didn't effect the ride or steering at all
    I would say it would be wheel balance.

    my moneys on a wheel balance it might not be out by much but it might be getting amplified by something else thats amiss. you might for example have a shot shocky or bush on the front end thats not dampening correctly so letting the vibration through....

    try a wheel balance from a speed shop as opposed to a tyre shop and see how you go.

    I bent a steering damper and like Long Stroke drove for a while with out it. Didn't give the problems you mention.

    I have experienced the shudder you mention though, it would be set of when I drove over rough sections of bitumen. I found after, checking everything, that it only went away when I changed the tyres. I was running Wrangler ST/Rs, which were a road biased tyre that were getting quite worn. When I changed to NEW BFGs the problem went.

    Go to a different tyre dealer and get another balance done. Also check the tyres very carefully for any sign of carcass damage/carbuncles etc.
