    How long can you keep Diesel in Jerry Can?

    Getting the camper trailer ready for a weekend of camping I found I still have a full jerry can of diesel. I would have bought it in July 2007 in Camooweal.

    I imagine it is still okay to use. Someone asked this on another forum and while a couple of people reckon 5 to 10 years there was no real rationale behind the answers. It has been pretty well undisturbed and is in a yellow plastic jerry can with a screw top lid.

    I can easily use it now but I am curious about at what point it would be no longer sensible to use it? Another 12 months, 5 years, indefinitely?

    As long as it or the jerry had no water in it when it went in and it hasnt been opened in that time then it should be fine for a few years.

    Just give it a good shake up to make shure that it is all mixed up as there are dewatering agents and surfactants etc that may drop to the bottom but not really likely unless it has been hot or gell build up if it's been excessively cold.

    I have used 2 yo diesel from a 205ltr drum with no ill effects.

    Paul;

    Just to be absolutely sure you can place some diesel treatment additive into the Jerry Can incase if there is any Fungi Growth inside the Jerry , but i doubt that would be the case.

    diesel has a shelf life of past 10 years providing it is water free, kept out of UV light and not exposed to some plastics or other contaminates.

    If your going to dose your fuel with the anti bacterial anti snot stuff dont over do it. In high enough concentrations it has the potential to eat some plastics and rubbers.

    Thanks Dave and others. Given it has been tucked away on the trailer under cover and not been opened since filled and is in a jerry can allegedly designed for diesel ie bought form SuperCheap and has diesel printed on the side, I will not worry about the additive, just tip it on end a few times and then use.

    I would use a funnel with a fine filter to sieve out any crap that may have accumulated over time, I used some diesel (old) out of a 44 gallon drum after rolling the drum to my car. I only got a few Klms down the road before everything gummed up, ended up going through 3 sets of filters and having to drain the fuel tank. There was a whole bunch of WAX deposits in the drum and rolling it broke it up into small bits, so to be on the safe side use a filter in your funnel, Regards Frank.
