    TD5 Brittle Hose WARNING

For you TD5 owners SERIOUSLY consider replacing the plactic return hose from the overflow bottle to the radiator.
Mine was brittle,I snapped it TWICE just brushing against it on the "hot" side of the engine.Over on the Overflow bottle side I couldnt snap it trying to!!!! I replaced it with a flexible hose.

Is this the one that comes into the bottom of the overflow bottle? If so mine was connected through a heat exchanger on the EGR valve, which i since removed as like you i brushed against it getting a face-full of hot coolant for my trouble. replaced it with flexible pipe also.

Not familiar with the heat exchanger type, mines an early TD5 so no EGR water cooler.
My hose goes from the TOP of the overflow to the RH top of the radiator. It is an air bleed return I believe.

I was going to do the same myself when I snapped a similar hose. To cut a long story short, I went from place to place, then got diverted to a specialist hose place and was about to get the fuel line, and by chance the guy asked me what I was doing, and he said fuel line isnt ok for coolant. He said every one goes on about how its made to a higher standard, and it is, but the rubber in fuel line is made for hydrocarbon, and water will just pitt it out.

Oh - and coolant hose is cheeper :P

The stuff I used is WAY overkill.I had a length of Aeroquip air brake hose. Its braided as hydraulic hose is,plus has a cotton cover.AND JUST HAPPENED TO BE THE CORRECT LENGTH
I already had the hose,if its not suitable I will look for the correct hose next time IM in the "big smoke".
Without it the D2 was going nowhere!!!

What a POS stupid idea/design those hoses are.
Cracked the one going to the radiator a while ago, but that was at the end, easily fixed with a length of rubber surround.

Got home last week and temp gauge (useless things anyway) drops to floor as I'm getting to the driveway.
I hop out and there's coolant all over the road.
Pops the bonnet and seems to be all over RH chassis rail. Bit more investigation and there's still coolant in the expansion tank, but seriously low.
A hole less than a pin*****, in the hose that runs from the bottom of the expansion tank to the EGR cooler is the culrpit.
Caused by rubbing on the side of the battery/jack box. It was brittle as anyway, and came apart in a few spots when I tried to remove it.

So, anyone out there with a Td5 I would suggest....
replace with new, or as the guys have said, something more substantial
get a low water alarm, or engine temp mgmt set up, check these stupid hoses when you're servicing, or getting it serviced.

No damage done, but could've been very ugly. I once had a d1 V8 cook itself thanks to the cracked expansion tank syndrome, wouldn't like any more expensive exercises like that, ever again!
