Disco TD5 Shorter wastegate rod - need more info!

After reading some threads on here, I took 2 turns out of the adjuster on my year 2000 TD5 Disco manual. The difference is very significant. The car is way more responsive.

I've been doing a lot of reading today to try and understand what is actually going on, but I'm still not sure. It's raised a few other questions.

Could somebody clarify this or explain it better please?

It seems that the wastegate is now in an initially more closed over position so that more boost is getting to the engine at lower revs instead of being sent out the wastegate. Is this correct?

Is the max boost that the engine gets still the same as before?

Will I be putting my engine under any more stress by having it like this?

Is fuel economy likely to suffer? I don't drive hard at all, but like the nicer drive.

It seems like the idle speed is a little higher now but I am not 100% sure. Its idling at about 750 rpm.

Does the ECU need to be tweaked or does it adapt automatically to the wastegate change?

I'm very wary of doing the wrong thing as my car has nearly 200K on it and I am running on a pretty tight budget. I've serviced it myself so far but there is little history up to me buying it 6 months ago.

I've been advised to get a boost guage which I will when I get back from holiday in a couple of weeks. Although at the minute I'm not sure what I'll be looking out for. Maybe hitting the ideal PSI when I boot it?

    Any input much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Hi Andy
Yes mine is much more driveable too.
I doubt it will use more fuel, unless you abuse the power.
Ive noticed the peak boost is slightly lower, possibly due to the wastgate opening sooner on the shorter shaft.
Still to mess with mine further to get the optimal adjustment.
The ECU opens the wastgate as boost increases.
Dont get a boost gauge, but the money towards a Nanocom, its got a boost readout in it and it will help you no end with future electronic faults.

Thanks for the reply. Getting a Nanocom isn't a bad idea. When I get something to read the boost level I'll post back.

    Cheers
