Asked Ward about the reason that Cooper's use 2nd in an auto for dyno tuning the vehicle. The answer was that it spins up to speed quicker and there is no risk of the auto changing back to 2nd from 3rd (1:1) or into 4th (O/D) during the tune.
Getting the speed is also the reason they use 3rd in a manual gearbox.
As was suggested earlier, it makes no difference for the tune which gear it is in only important if you want maximum torque in top.
