    Not happy Jan!!!!

Defenders, clutch master cyl is leaking again, Done about 20,000ks it cost me $4OO !! last time for a replacement unit, by our local trusted landy guy. $40 buys a pbr trailer one, have i been shafted as i can remember him muttering something about changing the rod, Thinking of ordering a genuine one and new rod and fitting the F@@@NG thing myself. Am i over reacting? If i don't reply its caus i'm working 24/7 Thanks for any info in advance.

    Cheers Sumo

    $400?????????

To fit one to a Td5 'fender takes a little longer than a Tdi due to the extra sound deadening etc to remove, I'm doing one tomorrow, using a 3/4 " bore PBR unit , fitted and bled under $150.

I don't think you are over reacting, if you are going to do it yourself, the clutch pedal box must come out to do it on the bench.

As Justin says its an easy enough job to do yourself. I had to do mine about 3 years ago.

the clutch pedal box does not need to come out... Ive done 3 with the tower in situe.

you need a 1/4 inch socket set with a swivel to get to the head side of the bottom nut then a skinny ratcheting ringy to get onto the nut takes about an hour to undo it replace it and bleed it. theres no sound deadening to get in the way unless you want to remove the pedal tower.

Given that its a bit of a PITA to do Ive looked into converting it to the never lets go silicone greasy goop fluid which also requires special seals $120 for the fluid and seal kit and you can get the parts from manitou forklifts australia. If your cylinder is marked tho it wont work.

have you already done the stainless steel sleveing thing?

I had both replaced under warranty a while back ... yep .. it's a landy thing.

Then the master cylinder went again so I got the local bloke to do both with ss sleeves. I've since heard that this can be a good idea or a bad one. If it's bad apparently it's cactus more or less from day one.

In my case I've had a good run so far ... touch wood. So from that I hope I've solved the problem.

Can't remember the cost, but seem to recall it was in the order of $400 or so for the lot.

since I fit all my own parts screaming at my suppliers is usually a bad thing for me to do... I just hand the phone number of my suppliers to my irate customers and say ring them and motivate them to get me the parts you need me to fit....

the stainless steel ones do leak occasionally but more often its a failed seal in a stainless bore thats the problem providing youve actually got a stainless bore fitted. With only a cast and machined MC they last a week or they last 1000 years its a luck thing.

if youve got the kit to do it go buy and inspect prior to walking out of the shop a stainless steel sleeved and stainless steel pistoned MC then fit it up....

you want the job done properly you either pay someone with a higher work ethic than you to do it or you do it yourself.

I've said it before but I'll repeat it.
If the problem occurs again replace the hose. Mine was cactus and it destroyed several masters and slaves.
