big lifts for defender 130

I've done nearly every so called 'extreme' track in SE QLD with a set of aired down 31" skinny MTR's, a rear locker and some soft 2" coils. My truck is far from unstoppable but even in its current form it can get a bit boring because I cant find a challenge anymore.

Yes, 35's would be nice sometimes for a bit more clearance under the diffs (especially the Salisbury) and a slightly better ramp over angle but for me, the trade offs arent worth it. Despite what's been said previously, I still have this suspicion, based on my observations, that big rubber is more for show than anything else.

From a technical point of view, if you want 35's and a big lift, buy a GQ or an 80 Series, they are much easier and cheaper to lift big than any Land Rover. They also need lifts and big rubber to look like a serious 4WD, a 110/130 doesnt.

Never felt a need to run them, haven't been stopped by terrain running 31's or 7.5 x 16s in the past and yes i've done big red and the gulf country. Why not throw a set of tractor tyres under there. Surely they could help. If you need more than a 2 + 2 lift and lockers to get through a track then you either arn't doing it right or you shouldn't be there anyway. I think its a matter of time before all of the glasshouse trails are closed due to the big tyre hilux tonka truck crowd destroying the tracks.

Because their 29's have taken them everywhere they want to go and never been stuck. Coles carparks are a bit like that. People that actually get out and get gnarly with it actually understand about the real benefits and problems of larger lifts and bigger tyres.

The sad thing is that they probably dont realise that everytime when they get hung up on something, or fail to drive through something the first time... that its actually them that is ripping the track up. No the ****** with the big bad tyres that didn't even notice that "do I need to go there' bit of track.

4WD's that are modified like this probably aren't seen in action, because the sights they are seeing cant be seen by those on 29's.

4WD's that cant make it up sand dunes are also the ones that corrugate the dunes, making it difficult for followers also.


All of this said, I did follow a Patrol with a massive lift on the highway and he would travel over about 90km/h. That POS should be off the road if its that unsafe. I've got 4' and can run up to 35" happily at open road limits. It can be done, but then again, somehow I dont think that I am as capable in the gnarly as this fella. lol

Do it, go the 4in lift and 37s, dont worry about all the people on here saying 31s are enough,, trust me they are not.... especialy when you hit some big ruts and lots of mud, my truck drives as good on 37s as it did on the 31s, only major difference is the lack of power with the bigger tyres. Theres been plenty of things that had me well stuck on 31s that i walked through without a single problem with 37s.

I hate it when people get on the soap box and start accusing anyone with a mod'd vehicle of ripping up tracks etc..... they are the idiots. Sure there are some drivers out there doing stupid ****, and sure there are heaps of jap 4wds running stupid ammounts of lift(6-12in) and rediculous size tyres on the road, but not all mod'd 4wd owners are out there doing damage. if you really want to put it to the test you will find that the less mod'd trucks getting a flogging to make it up the tracks are doing the damage compared to somthing very capable idling through no problems.



This is my 110, running 2in OME springs, 32in Procomp shocks and 37in MTRs, its a tight fit but a bit of trimming makes all the difference.

BTW before anyone gives me crap about driving on road with 37s, the car only gets used for offroad stuff, only time the 37s see the road is between my house and the bush. I have the old 31s if i need to take it anywhere on road.

most of this already applies in WA...

I run big tyres and a modded Deefer..but how much of the know continents have been explored by Series Landies on pizza cutters...about 90% it is a choice thing..if you want your mods but are illegal..tow the thing on a car trailer to your play area's.
Stay legal keep 35"s....37-39"s Iceland stuff..go the Tundra.......in QLD?............would look funny a County ripping around with 31"s an 4 x 37" on the roof rack...be like keeping wellies for cars....power to the big wheels and the freedom to do what you like.

Looks Iv created a cat fight over big rubber!!! Im a very experianced offroad and have had small and large rubber. Ford,Chevy,Jeep-many 4x4 of these brands all have been built up some small mtrs some larger mtrs-all have been locked up-corp.14 f9" dana44,35,30. depending on the size of the rig=the mods that would be put into the rig=Alonger whlbase has to have a higher ground clearance than a shrty=larger rubber! A lngwhlbase is much safer to drive on road being the weight is spead over a longer area.Trust me Iv ran jeeps with 38s and a short wheelbase chevy TRUCK with 38s and the longerwhlbase truck went down the road as if it had 31"rubber. The jeep on the other hand would be all over the road.To big for the road .So yes I do see some of your points.Like I have said WE ARE NOT TALKING MONSTER TRUCKS!!! We are talking about ground clearance on a LONG wheelbase 127" 35-37" rubber.Bottom line evryone has there idea.35-37"rubber is not out of hand and on a long whlbase it will ride,and handle better than any shorty running 33-35"rubber.Besides Ilike the challanges of the obsticals=going and getting in the **** NOT going aroundlike you guys with 245-31s LOL!!!
