Question things to do with auto

    Hi again more help needed

does the 4 speed auto on the 1990 RR vogue 3.9 ltr have any bearing on the ECU or does the ECU have any bearing on the trans and all so what determines the gear it should be in and how does it know to kick back when you stick the boot in.

    Cheers

    NO.
There is a cable attached to the accelerator linkage called the Kickdown cable, and it tells the transmission when to change.eg light throttle low speed and so on, until kick down at full throttle which will run the transmission to its max set shift points in all gears.

No refernce to the ECU, the kickdown cable handles the line pressure/kicdown side of things, the change speed is governed by convertor speed and kickdown cable

    Umm, why?

just to be picky its not the converter speed that governs the gear change its the rear govenor pressure balanced against the throttle cable pressure and the range selectors position....

if you tighten the cable it thinks you want to go faster sooner so it hangs onto gears lossen it off and it thinks your happy to cruise around so it upshifts sooner.

as the oil dies and becomes sludgy or thins out (depending on how and why its dying) it will behave differntlyin the govenor and cause some funny shifting.
