anyone help with a diagnosis? please!

    hey,

Driving at stockton today, on a failed attempt to get up a sanddune, reversing away i noticed a metallic "whirring". a bad sound, like a metal spinning against something.... sounds like is is coming from the middle of the car, in the transmission somewhere.

I stopped the car for a while and had a think while i sat as a passenger in my mates car, came back and drove it a small distance to some flat gorund to check levels. i noticed that the sound was dissapearing. decided that i had to drive it out. we werent overly far fromt he entrance at that point to i took my time and took it very steady steady. we drove it as far as the local servo and the noice has gone, it has although been replaced with a significant increase in the agressiveness of gear changes in the auto.

Any ideas whats wrong? nothing else is noticiable except for some play in the front drive shaft which i havnt noticed before (im able to rotate it abit).

    Anyhelp would be great!

how many Ks? how many K's since last service/box replacement?

does changing the CDL position make any difference? Hi/lo range?

to check if its the handbrake chock the front selecnt N on the tcase diff lock off and jackup then turn a back wheel with the handbrake off.

    mate,

she's done 140 000kms, i did the auto tranny about 9 months ago, full rebuild was required and thats stull just under warranty, probably under 20 000kms since the rebuild.

hi range she seems the same as always.. i can't notice any changes,
low range however has become far more jerky as the car cycles through the gears. the cdl doesnt seem to change anything, but dont know if its still operating.

i'll try the handbreak early tomora morning.
does it explain the "metallic grinding / rubbing" sound?

    Thanks heaps,
    Linc

I was about 50/50 on it being the handbrake picking up or shifting some debry within itself and then making the noise, If youve never heard it before it gets a lot of concern and as its more effective at slowing the vehicle when its going slow it can effect the changing of the gears in low range marginally.

do you know how to test the CDL? if so test that the other thing it can be is the front output seal picking up some crud and doing the same thing but its a much gentler noise and often missed.

Dont forget to check your Tcase oil level.

I can imagine up some very very expensive things for it to be but lets check the cheap and easy stuff you can do yourself first.
