The blue one is very appealing and not a bad price given it's extra's and what seems excellent condition, but then again the white one aint too bad either

Definately a good price with all those bits, but will you need it all?

Having said THAT, I recently bought a Barrett 2050HF for our tripping around remote areas, a definate must for safety if travelling alone with young kids etc and it set me back $3800. The rear maxi locker is about $3000, and the other bar work etc will soon add up.
So I guess, with the budget in mind, which one can you afford?? $8000 buys alot of diesel...

And another important point, the 2001 has a REAL rear differential, the salisbury, which was discontinued in 2003. These diffs are the strongest, and with a maxi locker, you will never kill it. The Banjo type rear end however, is a piece of rubbish. It may be a 4 pinion unit, but is like chalk and cheese compared to the sals.

Maybe th 2001 would be more suited, if you add the cost of fitting the HF and a decent rear locker etc to the 2003??

    AAAARRRGGGGHHH! Confusing isn't it????

Just a point here. Our japero had a broken connection to the fuel relay. That became a show stopper till we found the break. It is an old school oiler so.
The main thing is know the state of your rig and carry common spares.
My TD5 has failed to get home twice. once local and the other when I did the gearbox at Dobbo's. With all the other issues I was able to drive it home and then repair. long trips with issues 800km with only front wheel drive and a 580km trip with a dodgy injector harness.

Mate - those Aerotech seats are worth their weight in gold.

Can't get them anymore - they will introduce you to a totally new world of Defender driving.

    Defender Td5

I enjoyed driving mine until the Throttle Potentiometer played up in Newman and no one could or would, even look at it.
3 weeks later it arrived back in Perth following reluctance on the part of Autotrans to bother until LRA/RACWA jumped up and down about it!
That's the worst part of owning a Landie especially in WA now the vast majority of country dealers have been closed, no one can fix the things.

That fact has cost LR a new vehicle (possibly/most probably a RR) sale to my son and a new Defender or D3 to the cook and me.
No way will we be put in that position again as the next time it may be in a really remote situation.
So for now we use the 300Tdi until such time as I see a decent Troopy or 4.2 Pootrol, although I won't like either as much a Defender.
At least with a Troopy if it can be got to a town as large as Newman, it can be fixed.
    Happy LRing.
    Alan.

I purchased a high mileage TD5 Dual Cab with a 35% power chip fitted and full service history. With the high mileage I saved about $7k on book price.
My thoughts were that if anything went wrong then the money saved on purchase would correct any failings.
I covered 50k's before any problems occured, this was a cam follower breaking down causing a bit of damage
I had it repaired and drove it for another 3 months before I had to sell the vehicle. I must say it was the most exciting Landrover I have ever owned,it really performed well and I'd definately have another. By the way it had covered 280,000 kilometres when I sold it.

Dare I mention it, but I wonder what is going to happen to the resale value of defenders once the army start off-loading 1000's of isuzu 110's and 6x6's over the next few years. Will current Td5 owners wish to jump over to running an older vehicle yet one perceived as having better reliability and better suited to the bush? Who knows? If defenders are effected, then will it have a follow-on effect on other vehicles? My guess is that the off-road vehicle market is shrinking due to fuel price fears and unloading such a large number of vehicles into this market is sure to make a few ripples.
