    Wanted: 4.0/4.6 main caps/ bolts

Anyone have a ruined block that they don't mind separating the main caps and bolts? Obviously I am after the crossbolted kind.

Don't ask why the block I have has none....

Sorry, I want to sell the whole block, not bits. It's my spare.

    Hi Dave,

Yup, I'll have to line bore etc. This is what happens when the relevant caps etc get put somewhere they shouldn't...filed in the big blue filing cabinet outside...you know, the one that the big truck comes to empty once a week.
This WAS a siezed and overheated engine, heading for the scap merchant thats why the caps were 'filed'.... I'm getting the block tested for cracks and hardness, and if all OK it is going in a project/ class 8 off road vehicle I'd like to build
The crank and rods were retained, thats at least 1 good thing!
I recently had a 4litre block that had been VERY hot also. It DID end up at the scrap merchant.

    Justin,

I know this is like telling grandma how to suck eggs.......

....but check the top of the liners, particularly on cyls 4,5,6, and 7. If they aren't dead flush with the block deck, they have dropped. They will have to be replaced.

Here's a pic of a liner in a 3.9. I've seen one 4.6 where one liner had dropped over 5mm:

I won't be using the original liners RB, I have no faith in them at all after seeing how hot this engine got. There was an ingot of molten ally in the sump from a piston skirt...
If it turns out the block isn't soft, then it'll be top hat linered and utilised.

    Pedro:
I am thinking of entering class 8 here next year, I have an associate i'm 'sponsoring' running a RRC this year and having a ball, I would like to get back into it. I have a Defender chassis, a bulkhead etc, heaps of suspension parts, diffs etc. I also have a 727/LT230, and that is what the 4.6 will be attached to. I am also considering a D1 shell etc, as I have one, rolling ready to gut and use. It is a fair bit lighter than a 'fender but won't look as good

All I need now is the TIME

How did you go with this Justin?

I'm back at work now & there's a couple of scrap blocks tucked away in the corner here that wouldn't miss their caps.

    !!!!!!
Scott, I would be VERY appreciative if you could liberate a set and bolts for me

Thanks, I know there is a chance it won't be doable (I'll have to measure carefully to make sure they aren't a poor block to cap fit. The tunnel isn't important as it will be line bored...) but I would like to try.

Besides, this engine will be for ME and I give myself unlimited KM warranty!!

The 'caretaker' of the engines is back at work on Monday so I should be able to liberate the parts you need next week.
