Unhappy 98 TDi, the Disco is dead - blue smoke

    Hi

    The Disco has died!!!

SWMBO took it into town, I received a phone call to say a lot of smoke was coming out the exhaust and it was lacking power.

When i drove in and checked it the oil was not even on the stick (1Lt made it come back up to half way). I started her and blue smoke billowed out the exhaust like a smoke screen.

I undid the oil filler on the tappet cover and smoke came out of there to, as well as a lot of air and a choofing sound. It sounded terminal!

I nursed it down to my work where it can be secured and will take it to a mechanic tomorrow.

The question is what could it be, turbo? headgasket? or something else. Yesterday I noticed a bit of smoke from the exhaust and a different smell which I put down to a full tank od deisel from a different servo.

Any help would be great .

    Cheers Andy.

    Hi Andy,
At the very least, I'd suspect a bent valve. As to what has caused this I can't be sure, but would be looking at a "chewed out" keyway on your bottom pulley.

    Best of luck,
    Peter

    head gasket

thats just what has happened to us...including the chuffing out of the the oil cover on top of the rocker cover

not that terminal for us skimmed head and new gasket hopefully, almost all back together so will be able to say in in the next week or so whether thats whats all

already have the head back on with new gasket etc, but while we had it apart we have sent the injectors off to be looked at to make sure they dont need overhauling once they come back will be able to fire it up
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

As Dullbird said its the head gasket , not too much of a problem can be fixed and not terminal

Thanks for the replies so far.

140000 Km on the clock, I am only the second owner, Iv'e had it since 104000 Km. Serviced every 5000, the original owner sold it to me due to having his licence suspended (he was in his late 80's).

There is no water transfer with the oil, the coolant level is fine and there was no overheating. It has not displayed the normal headgasket signs I have seen in the past, although it is my first diesel.

The vehicle has done next to no hard work, just normal camping, light 4x4 work.

I have had 3 beers now, it does not seem so bad, just lots of $$$.

Can I start a petition to get JC to move to northern Tasmania? He is a bit too far away for this kind of repair .

    Andy.

mmm chewed out key, then the car would not go if inside the timing cover (as the timing would be so far out ), outside the timing cover then it would do nothing to the internals of the engine apart from over heating it and jaming it solid when it over heats too much (as nothing turning the water pump ). But you would noticce the power steering was working beofre it over heated

A blown turbo could account for the oil consumption and smoke, but not the chuffing and smoke inside the engine.

yes we never had any coolant lost either or water in the oil.....BUT there was wear on the head and gasket causing oil to pass into number 1 and number 4 cylinder.....i think in turn (this is what we were lead to believe) the cylinders then pressurize the oils sump or something like that causing oil to spray out all over engine bay! thats what happened to ours

i bet my life after experiencing ours its a head gasket as it sounds exactly the same....only difference is our cab filled with smoke and when we did stop dropped oil
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

Hi Dullbird, how many K's when yours went?

I think you and Reads are on the money, but mine was making a choofing sound not a chuffing sound like yours. Could yours have been choofing and not chuffing?

Mmm beer! a great part of a staple diet!

    Cheers Andy.
