Thread: Interesting noise

This afternoon I finished the service on the 110. As I slowly backed out of the shed, I could hear a clear, musical tinkling noise over the clatter of the engine. Stopping, but leaving the engine running, I opened the bonnet - and the noise got louder. Carefully looking at the apparent source of the noise, without doing anything silly like putting hands near the fan, I found ---

a 17mm ring/open end spanner balanced between the steering box and the power steering pump, jiggling in time with the engine.

Switched off and retrieved it. It was the one I had used on the union under the fuel pump to clean the strainer, and had apparently fallen when I first started the engine, although I don't know why I didn't hear it tinkling when I was checking for oil leaks after changing the oil filter (new ones, that is).

lucky you found it in time, reminds me of when i was an apprentice at trade school, bloke was changing a rose cutter on the milling machine and left the ring spanner on the spindle after tightening up the collet. Started the machine up, spanner flew accross the workshop at mach 10.1 hitting the bloke working on the lathe on the other side of the room, knocking him out cold.....
