It depends how much the box is. If it is cheap enough I would fit the second hand box and rebuild the other as a spare.
JUST WONDERING IF ANY-ONE HAS REBUILT A TD5 DEFENDER BOX AS I HAVE JUST DROPPED 5TH GEAR. I HAVE THE OPTION OF A LOW KM BOX. MY DEFENDER HAS 215,000 ON THE CLOCK.

Cost my warranty people $3.5k for a rebuild after 5th gear went then cost me another $3.5k after the rest of it self destructed.![]()
I've just replaced 5th gear support bearings and oil pump etc in a 2000 Td5 130CC. I did in situ, and it took from start to finish in around 8 - 9 hours.
Have you lost 5th altogether? or is it noisy?

When you say in situ, does that mean you didn't pull out the box? 5th still works but just makes a clicking noise like one of the teeth has broken.
5th gear clicking means yes, it has lost some teeth, and is due to the failure of the rear support bearing, allowing the shafts to spead apart under load and the tips of some of the gear teeth to strip off. Do not cntinue to drive it, and yes, it can be repared with thw gearbox in the vehicle if you want to, as the R380 has all the 5th gear components in the aft section of the trans.
Obviously, if there appears to be excessive chips and metal in the drained oil, then don't forget it would've found its way through the other bearings etc...

Age, poor quality oil or infrequent oil changes, and towing continuously in 5th gear.
