    Best or Recommended Gearbox Oil for LT95

    The manual (Stage 1 V8 SIII) says engine oil, is this the best or is there a preferred oil that does a better job, Synthetic maybe, appreciate any tips, Regards Frank.

    Its the same as a 4 speed early Rangie. A good synthetic oil is best. I'm pretty sure the transfer is 90 oil though.

    I was looking at the same thing yesterday for my Rangie. Found this thread;

    Oil Recommendation for LT95 4 speed box and Isuzu 4bd1

    I decided to go with VMX80

    VMX80, is that a brand name or the specific name of that type of oil, if so what manufacturer makes it, Castrol, Shell, etc., Regards Frank.

    Castrol VMX 80 I personally found it too light for my LT95 although it did give the best gear changes when cold.
    I found Mobil 1 the best

    Hi Frank,
    I'm using just a good quality (Pennzoil) longlife MA 15w40 engine oil in my main box and transfer. I change it with every engine oil change, (Coz I can) and so far it comes out clean andd the filters etc are spotless. I agonised over this when I bought the 'new' box, and after talking with Dave 'blackus knightus' I'm going with the ADF specs, which say (castrol) 15w40 engine oil in both.

    So far so good, even with a recent towing trip to QLD and back, the oil was spotless etc when I got home in both boxes. I'm also running a transfer case temp gauge, and with the 15w40 oil and the taper roller bearings, it never got above 60deg.

    I DID have a 3rd to 4th selection problem once while I was away, and it has now 'fixed' itself. So I am not bovvered.

    I agree the VMX80 could be bit light - but given that the gearbox and TC appeared to have not been changed in long time - the gearbox oil was predominantly dark grey, the TC was almost black and both had a very high percentage of sludge, I will probably be changing oil again soon to flush the residual rubbish through. I will look at a heavier oil then.

    Hi,

    Had an LT95 for years. I remember the oil question from several posts on various fora.

    Apparently you must NOT use EP 90 in the TC because it has an additive that eats the brass shims in stock 95's. For the same reason you should not use either GL4 or GL5 oils because one of these has the same additive. (I can't recall which one).

    I just use engine oil with some Lucas...... Morey's additive and change it regularly every blue moon.

    PhilipA had the answers from memory.

    cheers, DL
