    olympic steeltrek, are they noisey?

I wish to fit olympic steeltreks to my stage one, are these military tyres noisey on the road'the guy at the local tyre shop said they were and tried to sell me some more expensive tyres, I don't think he's even seen one before! I'm trying to build a rattle & squeek free landy so any advice on these tyres would be great!!

something more expensive.....i thought steeltrek's were right up there $$$ wise, i'm sure there is better value for money

the noise doesn't bother me in a defender, in saying that i will be changing to something else for my high country trip next year as they are not the best performers

just about anything else on the market is a better buy unless you are paying 30 bucks ea for them.

all right on leaf sprung stuff but they suck rocks on coilers imho.

i have them on one of my defenders and would never recommend them to anyone after two lost the plot on the cooma trip this year.

    yes they are noisey

they are the tyre you want if you dont know what you are going to do with the vehicle.

they are the only tyre I have seen that rates oer 50% across the board but if you know what you want there are much better tyres for various tasks.

They ride hard as they are a heavy duty light truck tyre.

I like them but then I tend to find myself getting in the situations that justify them But I only buy them when I can get them new and cheap. (read under $200 each)

Im more than happy with them , but going by previous post,s ^^^^^^ it could just be a personal choice by me

Had them on the Army Landies and I couldn't hear them over the noise of the car

Had an 8 ply on a Rollover and Army ones were 10 ply.

I don't think they were as good as they were made out to be, we staked them by the dozen on K89 running in the scrub at Kununura and blew a few on the hwy on the trip home and I think only the Bridgestone 604 and the BFG AT are the only tyre with an older tread pattern.

Long mileage wasn't an issue though, check date on side wall, they only had a 5 year life blknight.aus might know as I don't remember

    hope this helps

they initially had a 10 year shelf life that was reduced to 5 for a few reasons...

they are less prone to staking than your making out if your sensible with them But they are not bullet proof and will suffer readily if abused....

DO NOT try to run them tubless you will only get 5K Km out of them if your lucky

Dont over inflate them or run them fast underinflated They're a heavy tyre to run and the construction of them will not handle overheating or overpressure.

I think the life may even be under review again as were getting some in that are stamped as out of date but we keep getting told to fit them anyway and then annote the fitment date and that they are to be removed by date XX....

I think they are looking at them having a 5 year life if exposed or fitted but if warehoused then the tyre life only progresses by half but then the remainging life goes at the normal rate... But thats just me guessing.
