    Exclamation Multiple spark systems (MDS)

    Hi,
Has anyone tried the multiple spark systems that are out there?

What are the pros and cons?

If they are that good why don't all cars use them now?

    Hi Ebony Elizabeth,

I've got one on a 350 Chev in a 74 RRC. MSD brand.

Drops the voltage across the points (remember them?) to FA and makes the coil fire 5 times per compression stroke.

Points last nearly indefinitely and it definitely runs better. The system is bypassed when doing the timing so you can tell the difference. It can also be disconnected in about 2 sec to run the old way if something goes wrong. Have used it for 10 yrs with no probs.

I would be going the trigger wheel - EDIS route if doing it again, and doing away with the distributor altogether. It's a PITA right at the back of a Chev.

    cheers, DL

Some apparently new ideas are effectively recycled old ones that are not necessarily bad, but often with some refinement.
Land Rover owners especially note that T model Fords, which a derogatory insinuation was made about are preferable to many modern cars for some types of roads LR's are designed for. eg They have high clearance, a light flexible chassis made of high tensile steel and tall narrow wheels ie 5X21. These usually dig in and grip lengthways and climb out of ruts better than low wideys.

If there is a system available that is not hugely expensive, I think it would be worth a try. Having multiple sparks may make the fuel light up more quickly, which may make the engine knock. So retard it a little bit. It may make the fuel burn more efficiently, so improve economy. If I drove a petrol, I would consider trying it if it was affordable.

Just because technology is old, does not make it bad. I have seen Model T Fords go places many people would not take their modern four wheel drive.

    Well..........

As I said previously, mine definitely runs better with MSD connected, but I can only compare it with old style points and coil.

I have read somewhere that one coil is not really capable of firing effectively 5 times in such a short duration, which is why we see EDIS systems or even one coil per plug on LS Chevs these days, rather than MSD.

    cheers, DL

Thanks for the more positive feedback.
I have also heard that the coil may be a limiting factor, only I have poor peek power and lousy fuel economy. I want to do something.

This seemed like a more affordable solution than the Haltec, which I was all booked into have installed then the fridge freezer died - dam their expensive.
