Thread: Info on mid 90's disco diesel

Hey everyone. I am thinking of getting a md 90's diesel discovery but dont know much about them. I have had diesel landcruisers in the past and know that they are really strong and reliable even when they have ran for over 400,000 kms. Is this the case with the landy diesels. The ones that I have seen for sale have around the 200,000 to 250,000kms on them, and are selling for around the $7500 to $9000. Is there anything common that goes wrong with these models. Would love to hear from anyone that has had one. Will be doing alot of 4wd and hope they are reliable when out back.

I'd try to get a late 96 - 99 model. Simply because a lot of the 300Tdi timing belt issues had been fixed by then. I regularly get 9.5-10L/100Km on the highway and 14-15L/100Km towing a 1.8t float with my 5 speed manual. I couldn't be happier with it's performance.

Have a look for rust around the alpine windows (first sign will be bumpy, hard rubber seals) & check under the front carpets for rust or moisture. If the carpets are wet it is a sign of a leaking heater core. That in itself isn't that much of a problem, but it leads to loss of coolant and thus cooking the motor.

Yes look for the later models but there wouldnt be any around these days without the upgraded timing cover and changes to set up as the timing belt would have let go well before now.

In on road trim you can look at getting into the high 7's on the hwy but with 4wd gear on it like bull bar, snorkle, recovery gear and heavier/chunkier tyres you will be doing well to get under 10l/100kms but driving nice you wont do much more.

Mine has done 307,000kms and never been apart, it has had external parts changed (lift pump,water pump, timing belts and rebuilt turbo) but that has to be expected for a car that has done 2 trips around Oz with a van on the back and 2 up the guts 1 with and 1 without but the 1 without I was getting 13l/100km sitting on 130 to 145kmh in the NT at the time no probs.

By the way, mine a 97 auto with 35mm Ridepro lift and 235 85 16 BFG AT's and gets used off road at every opertunity
