You would be suprised how little difference there is in weight. A 33/12.50/15 is a light load range tyre, quite light, supple and soft. They dont run high pressures and mould around rocks etc well. 7.50/16 and 235/85/16s are a high load range tyre and are built to carry high loads at much higher pressures. They are a light truck tyre and are made much heavier and are much harder riding. To put it another way, the light truck tyres send a lot more road shocks through to the suspension and body, the 33's just soak the shocks up in the much taller side wall, driving on dirt roads and rocky river beds are a doddle, the tyres doing as much work as the suspension. I only ever broke 1 half shaft in my V8 110, running 235/85/16 all terrains, never had a problem with the 33/12.50/15 mud terrains, no wheel spin to cause excess stresses in the drive train.

thats very interesting. you hear alot of guys with the bigger tyres breaking stuff, maybe its because they are a bit more 'adventurous' than others...

I will take that on board. I am pricing 235/85 and 33/12.5's at the moment and that may dictate which way I go as well as I have a limited budget.

if I go 33's then I have to get wheel arch flares as well so that has to be factored into the budget

Its not the spinning that stresses things it is when it spins then grabs. The drivetrain has to then absorb its own inertia.

Yep, wheel spins, revs go up, wheel gets grip again and bang! The same thing happens when you lift a wheel off the ground under power.

Don't forget you may need to certify things as well, better check on that too before you invest any money

I have found I can run slower and easier over terrain with bigger tyres.Less load on everything.People break drivelines because they can't drive, they just point and boot it. Pat
