Thread: I have a gurgle - should I worry?

    I'd be paying proper attention to this noise, and def don't trust your temp gauge, as if your coolant is low the sensor is measuring air not water.

    If your heater is not working or weak then there is prob not enough fluid in the system.

    I ignored this for a couple of months on my 98 TDi300 Disco and ended up doing a head gasket from overheating with low fluid level.

    The gurgles were loudest in the morning when first started.

    I got a low coolant level alarm to make me pay attention next time.

    There seems to be plenty of coolant in the system. It only makes one gurgle when first started and then no more.

    My 3.9lt D1 has been doing this for about 2 and a half years on and off, I have a low level coolant warning which doesn't sound at the same time never overheated once, no issues at all, i am guessing it is trapped water in the heater core or hoses that moves when the car is turned on, just a guess but as i said over 2 years without an issue

    I've now checked the coolant both when its cold and also after a long run when its hot and in both cases the coolant level is right on the recommended level, so I'm hoping all is OK.

    I have the same in my D1 V8.

    If I have the heater fan on when I start the engine, there is no noise.

    If I do not have the heater fan on get the gurgle.

    There is no change in the level of the coolant regardless of heater fan on or off.

    I've asked a couple of garages and the general concesis is air traped in the heater core.

    Have just developed the same sound. Pretty positive it is air trapped int the system or blown head gasket. Hoping that it is just air trapped in their stupid cooling system on 300 tdi system does seem difficult to get air out of. maybe need to fill it up with it resting on its rear bumper to get the fill up point higher than the engine.

    My Disco got a new head gasket last year and I'm fairly confident it isn't that causing the gurgle. Its running very cool and the needle doesn't move.
    I might try turning the heater on before starting it and see if there is no gurgle. If there isn't I'll assume its just air in the heater I think.
