Previous fitment of an EGT?
Re the brass plug, the melting point iof brass is around 900+ deg C
Thanks for the advice. I went to tap the hole this morning and lo and behold it did have a thread! Stranger by the minute!
So I just put one of my brass drain plugs (the ones you put in the transmission for water crossings) in the hole for now. Will brass be OK in the temperature?

So what happens to brass at about 400-500? Is the brass plug OK to leave? It would never get to 800 degrees.
Probably was an old EGT fitting as you suggest.
Oddly though, the hole was threaded more or less downwards. If I was going to drill and tap a hole, I would have just done it perpendicular to the surface. That suggests it was done off the vehicle in a vice or jig.
I have no idea what was there. I am normally the one doing any servicing. However, it was in the shop having the auto replaced (twice) a couple of months ago. Do they remove that piece of exhaust when replacing the auto?
