    Crankshaft rotation

    G'Day
As a result of daydreaming crankshaft on 300tdi turned anticlockwise through about 10 degrees. I was trying to remove the bolt at the time and the belts were all on. What are the consequences of having done this?

    very little i imagine.
I believe the risk is that the lesser tension on the timing belt means it may skip a tooth but it hasnt happened to me?

Mine went back half a turn or so whilst undoing crank bolt tother day too?

I imagine if your t-belt was on the loose side it would increase the potential?

its only a problem if you do it during setup of timing or rebuilding an engine and even then its pretty reversable...

if you tried turning the engine over for dozens of rotations then it might be a problem maybe if your timing belt didnt like you and was having a bad hair day.

If your really really concerned about it have someone who knows the tdi's check the timing and the max lift of the injector pump plunger, if thats off then youve got problems....

I very strongly doubt you will have a problem...

    I'll second that Harry..........WTF

You wanna elaberate a little on what you were actually doing?
From what I can make out the timing belt was still on? and the whole assy moved? If that's on the mark then SFA will have changed. But like I said, I really don't understand what your trying to say.

    heres a guess....

somewhere hes read that if while doing something you miss the timing marks dont turn the engine over backwards rotate in the normal direction untill the marks come up again.

hes extrapolated from this that turning an engine over backwards is bad and wants to know what damage can be done if it happens.

roverrescue has jumped on the main problem of turning engine backwards and that is that the tensioner is set up to work one way, if you turn it backwards it can allow enough slack to develop for the belt (or chain) to jump teeth....

    and thats bad....

but 10 degrees aint going to do it...

theres enough info in the original post.. he was trying to undo a bolt (pick one thats on a pully ie alternator pully fan or the crank bolt) and has turned the engine backwards. What might he have done to the engine...

I'm confused, whats there to be confused about....

When I had the timing a bit retarded on my petrol IIA, it would run on for a bit once it had been switched off. Then it would fire up momentarily in reverse, with a cough and splutter out of the air cleaner. It never had any camshaft timing issues. The small amount that you turned your engine backwards will have caused no problems, assuming the tensioning mechanism was still functioning.
