Keep the Rangie (or get a disco?? :(

Hi people - this is the first post here so be gentle. I`m in abit of a dilemma. i have two landies, a 1967 S2a (with a toyota 2b diesel and 5spd) and a 1978 2dr RR on LPG, which is a pretty reliable old beast.

I have one 2 year old son, and another baby on the way in 9 weeks. Putting kids in car seats in the back of the rangie is a bit of a hassle, but doable, but the wife has suggested a 4dr vehicle might be the way to go. This would mean a discovery, likely a 1996-98 V8, as Tdi`s are pretty rare over here.

I`m trying to rationalise whether I just spend a bit of money getting the RR tidier and quieter and live with the hassle of putting kids in the back), and have a nice 2dr on gas, or I go to the dark side and buy a disco.

I`m a bit worried about the Discos`s thpugh - they drive like vans compared to a RR with firmer springs and a 1 1/2" lift, and have that whole soccer-mum thing going on. The RR on the other hand gets appreciative comments and offers to buy it all the time.

I`d appreciate any comments / advice.

If happy leaning through the rangy i'd say keep that... love the 2 doors

On the otherhand... i have a 98 disco v8 as my shopping trolley ummm i meant runabout ummm oh you know what i mean and you do get use to the bodyroll after a couple weeks... a completely different though similar experience to driving the barges (eg: rangies)

But best option would be - GO THE FENDER

If it's the designated 'family' car, then having only 2 doors would really get on my nerves.
So if you do want to go to 4 doors and safety is obviously a big factor, then a D1 Disco with airbags would be the go. ABS, according to insurance company reports, does not influence accident statistics (i.e. in general, it's not necessarily safer, as most drives get used to it and brake later). I'd avoid vehicles with any significant lift, as most 4wd fatalities are due to role over. Note that Airbags wont help your kids in the back seat. The best thing that will halp them is a big vehicle with stability control - but thats big bucks. However just driving a Disco or Rangie, with it's shear mass and stiff chassis, will stack the odds in your families favour compared to the increasing numbers of small cars out there. Both the disco and rangie are great cars - I'd look out for both and grab the best deal that comes up.

why not buy a 4 door rangie classic anywhere up to 1993 model, they are going cheap and better than a disco by a country mile

If you live in Vic they're cheap but in QLD, RRC's are highway robbery in most yards and even private sales they're asking waaaay too much IMO for what most part are a 15 od year old Rangie. You need to be quick especially the cheapies

Should buy a couple from Vic, bring them up here and put $2K on them, would make a reasnoble profit And they still would be cheap compared to what's out there

I went from an 81 2dr to an 85 4 dr just before my first was born as the missus wouldnt hyave been happy if 1 of those heavy MF doors hit her in the back while loading/ offloading from the rear seat. I then moved up to a disco and havent regretted it ( well only slightly). Safety wasnt the driving force i just found the right disco at the right time plus the rangie was getting old and i got sick of maintaining it all the time. I often see nice late 80's early 90's rangie for sale cheap and wonder if i can con the wife into driving the disco full time - like thats going to happen .

I bet the disco doors are only half the weight of the rangie ones !
