Seeking info on front diffs
Howdy,
On Saturday I purchased a Stage 1 Diff for my series 3 which was my project for Sunday. All went well. During the pre purchase conversations in the forum lots of really interesting info was forthcoming, however, what I am after is a soldiers five on the compatibility of parts between difs (in relation to the stage 1), modifications that can be made (there was lots of talk re diff locks after market half shafts etc), what is the external difference (it look the same on the outside as the old one), and can anyone give me a direct link to a site with a manual for the stage 1 series 3 front diff.
Are the numbers on the casing serial numbers or model numbers or both?
h
Thanks to all those guys who guide me through what I thought was a transfer case problem, you live and learn.
I look for ward to your collective genius.
Thanks,
Tim.

Externally they look almost the same, just that the stage 1 diff should (usually) have a flat bottom with the drain plug offset (like on coillers). The diff centre is rotated upwards (in remation to spring mounts), but that is hard for the untrained eye to notice. Will also have V8/6cyl brakes. But only way to be 100% sure is to pull an axle shaft out and check there is a CV joint in there.
As far as parts compatability:
Any (rover) diff centre will bolt straight in.
You can swap the centre housing for a normal series one and vice versa.
The outer swivel housings are the same, the inner (swivel balls) from a normal series will bolt up, but don't have enough clearance for the CV joints.
Inner axles are unique (but aftermarket versions available)
CVs are unique, but interchangeable with AEU2522 (county) - just need to mod the drive flange slightly.
Hub bearings and stub axles are the same as RRC/County (wide bearing)
Hubs are unique, but can be interchanged with County rear (drum) hubs - just need to use a (modified) county drive flange as well - or re-drill yours (coiller are 5-bolt, series are 6)
Drive flanges are the same as SIII 109"
Brakes were used on 6cyl as well, but any (complete) series brake assembly will bolt on.

Thanks for all that,
Ive noticed that the prop shaft is rubbing when I go over bumps, this would be due to the diff ctr being rotated slightly upwards, I guess. This will be fixed by raising the front slightly. I put parabolic on a few months back and was assured that 2 leafs would be enough. not likely, a fantastic ride but it sits too low.
I was just a bit concerned when I pulled out the old one and I couldn't differentiate between the two. I remember someone the other day saying that the v8 diff sits differently and that it may effect the prop shaft in some way.
I cant wait to pull the old one down and complete my land rover diff apprenticeship.
Any links to stage 1 diff manual would be much appreciated.
Once again thanks for the info.
Tim.
