    R380 Ratio's

Hi Guys . Is there any ratio difference between the V8 r380 and the Tdi r380 ? Or are they the same ?

And are the transfer cases the same ratio's ? Thanks

I believe that the input shaft length and bell housing are different in R380s used on defender which all come with Tdi engines and the V8 used on Discos. Don't know if the R380 from disco TDis will fit a a defender Tdi, suspect not as I think there is something else different in the way the selector sits on top of the box.

Ratios in the box are the same. TC is different in high range from defender to disco something like 1.4 to 1.2 with the disco havoing the taller 1.2 ratio.

Some one that knows what they are talking about should come along soon

R380's in Defenders are different in the shift rails and selectors, and first gear is slightly lower. They are not easily fitted to disco's due to the fact that you have to dissassemble the box to change the shift rods and selectors etc over

The V8's have different input shafts and bellhousings, and it isn't as simple as changing to diesel input shaft as some gearboxes have different number of teeth and tooth angles etc depending on suffix...

Transfer cases are interchangeable, but Defender has 1.410:1 high range compared to Disco 1.221:1. Both share the same low range.

I have fitted a Defender box to a Tdi D1, and apart from the painful job changing the shift rods etc over, it towed well with the slightly lower 1st.
