Disco 1 V8 belt, bearing, idler noise?

Guys my 97 Disco 1 V8 has started a high pitched eeeeeeeeeeeeee type noise at the front of the engine. The noise is not there when the engine is cold. It also goes away when you increase the revs. When idling or at low revs it is an awful loud sound.

The V8 has one belt and it was replaced with a new one about 3 months ago.

I have put a big metal bar on the alternator, water pump and power steering pump to listen for the noise but it is not coming from these.

How do I tell if it is the idler pulley that is talked about in some threads? What else could it be?

    Pete

    Pete,

If you can get your stethoscope (bar) onto the idler/tensioner pulley you should determine if that is the culprit. Otherwise remove the belt from the suspect and run it by hand and feel for a gritty action. If you cannot confirm it by either of these methods then the next option is by substitution. Start with the most likely and cheapest parts first.

The other bearing it could be is that used in the waterpump/thermoclutch fan.

have you eliminated the belt, if not try baby/talcom powder on the belt, sounds stupid but works a treat, be careful applying with engine running, you might turn white as a ghost.
Once eliminated the belt, try spraying something like lanolin or WD40 on the bearing area of the different options one by one with engine running, you will hear a distinct sound change when you find the culprit.

    Thanks for the advice.

Further use of the Stethoscope didn't reveal any more. Since we are going on a big trip at the end of next week, need to get this sorted quickly so went to the mechanic who removed the belt and checked by hand as you said. Conclusion is that its the waterpump. The belt tensioner/pulley is believed to be ok. Genuine replacement water pump costs $190. Will probably have to whip this in.

But tomorrow I will try the talc and wd40 trick. Have got a feeling this is not the end of the saga!
