Starting woes, 96 V8i disco
Wonder if anyone has had the same problem as my V8i disco and maybe a solution.
I sometimes have a problem with the starter motor not activating after the engine has been stopped for 10 to 15 minutes. (more often in warm weather than cold). The solenoid doesn't click - nothing. But the battery is OK. I think there is an issue with heat build up in the engine bay because if you open the hood and wait about 20 minutes til it cools down, it starts OK. I had the problem a few years ago and my mechanic said it was the starter motor so he replaced it. It fixed it for a while (maybe 12 months) but problem has returned. Vehicle has done less than 20K km since starter was replaced. any thoughts appreciated.

Immobiliser spider (black box) - behind the radio. Almost certainly as you describe it. The heating/cooling performance is related to bad solder joints. Either pull it out, and bypass, or pull it out, and re-solder. It's an easy, if tedious task, and getting the dash out intact is difficult.
To test, you can bypass it directly, by running a wire directly to the starter solenoid (I think).
