Thread: Problems with fitting tyres to LR rims

Ive fitted of tyres to LR's and other brands, hwy, AT and MT and I have never had a problem fitting them unless they are rusty.

There is on some after market rims a second bead but it is there to help locate the tyre for the main bead not anything to do with running flat.

All tubeless rims have to run a bead and if you dont lube the tyre enough it may not locate properly but it only takes letting it down again lubing and re inflating.

LR alloys can be a bit annoying and dont locate properly more because they are a bit pourous but there are worse around.

What has happened is that he didnt bother to try and locate it properly, didnt lube it enough and then over inflated it when then it goes BANG.

I'd put it down to a tyre bloke who might get a rude shock when he puts through the warrenty claim.

Oh by the way, they didnt charge you for the tyre did they?

I have herd of some places that have tried that one.

So in this guys view, Landrover should be sued for building additional safety into their wheels? What a tosser! Yes they are a tight fit, when I had my BFG's fitted to the Disco alloys on my Defender they took half an hour to get the first bridgestone tyre off, but no problems fitting the M/T's on. If these tyres cant stand the pressure of being fitted (they wont be rated to anything like 80 PSI anyway) I don't like your chances using them off road. In my veiw, the guy who fitted them is an idiot, max pressure for seating a bead is around 30 PSI, probably just more lube required.

Yeah I thought it was a bit weird. No he didnt charge me for the tyre...I would have gone him if he tried that on...after all they made me wait 2.5 nearly 3 hours to fit 5 bloody tyres!

As I said, I run BFG muddies offroad. These are purely around town and highway touring tyres. It is amazing the construction differences though...these things are really flimsy! But they do ride well and come will a good warranty.

If you bugger a tyre in the first 25 percent of its life they pay for a brand new one. If you bugger it in the next 25% of its life, they pay half. And you get free puncture repairs anywhere in Australia through Bob Jane and Tyres&more.

see theres an art to fitting landrover tyres...

do it properly the first time and you have no problems with them.

I get the same deal at work when it comes to changing rover tyres....

If hed washed then lubed the rim and the inside edge of the bead before trying to get the tyre on it would have seated first go and at somewhere between 25 and 35psi..

wheres he at Ive got a tyre thats been on a rim that I know has been swiming on a fishing rover more than once in its long abused life....

I've had new tyres fitted several times and each time the tyre men have difficulty removing the tyres even with their fancy machines. Last time, fitting Cooper
STTS two months ago, they could not get one to reseat on the bead using standard approach. The air supply to tyre fitting machine (80psi) couldn't do it, the rattle gun air (100psi +) couldn't do it, so they started again and used some fancy extra slippery lubricant to get it to seat.

What this has indicated to me is, trying to either remove or fit a tyre to a rim in the middle of nowhere with only tyre levers will be a waste of time. Might have to invest in one of those more expensive models
