    My ex-girlfriend was a ford fan... Pushed a fair bit of air too but I doubt she'd fit behind the radiator of a Landy...

    i think he would be lucky if he had aircon in a 200tdi defender.....unless it was an after market fit.

    i also thought running a car without a thermo was something to get you out of trouble.....as i would of thought a thermo that doesn't open is far worse than not having one in there

    If you need to run with a stuck thermostat,take it out and block the by-pass.The coolant will always take the path of least resistance and that is not through the motor. Pat

    Yeah you're right Dullbird - no air-con in this old girl.

    I've taken out the intercooler and radiator and cleaned them up. I found the sticker on the radiator, it was actually 4 years ago it was done now, and it's been everywhere from the NT, Simpson, Tassie, High Country etc so it's done alright.

    However I really don't think it's the radiator. I've blown it clean, straightened the fins and I'm about to paint it before putting it back in.

    The intercooler was absolutely filthy. I don't think it's ever been done. I ended up having to wash it as blowing it with air wasn't doing anything. One I've got that clean enough, I'll straighten the fins as well and paint it.

    Interestingly enough, the fan hub spring is held in with a bit of sealant - I've never noticed that before so it's well and truly been there for at least 8 years then..........

    On top of that the front of it was covered in filthy oil. Now whether that has come from somewhere else I don't know, but with the small amount there I don't think so.

    Might have to look at that Ford Falcon idea, as it definetely seems the cheaper option. Sounds like the uni-joints, Ford Falcon suit them as well.

    Well I started fixing the problems from my last trip. As per normal, when I break something, it's definetely broken:



    I pulled out the radiator and gave it a good clean, straightened up the fins and hit it with some flat black. Looks a lot better now:



    The intercooler got the same treatment:



    I will most likely give them a couple more coats as I only used one spray pack on the both of them



    I also pulled out the viscous fan whilst I was at it. It's definetely stuffed that's for sure. I went down and had a look at the AU hub, and it is the same. Problem I came across is that the fan itself is larger than what the Defender is - so to fit it I'll need to cut the fan down in size to fit into the cowling. Not too sure if I want to go down that route or not:





    End result, at this stage still working on the old girl. And she's still in the driveway unfortunately.

    the thing is was it clean properly the last time? did you take it to a reputable place?

    sticking a hose through it and a coat of paint wont sort it if it needs a good rodding.....
    like i say we were caught out by this twice....changed everything but the radiator.
    still if you put it back together and just by cleaning the dirt its ok, then thats a good result for yeh.
    we also had the top of ours blocked from mud once in the uk and attached to the rad grill was our UK number plate and the solonoid box for the winch put all those things together and the car only had about 20% of the rad in use...made for a very hot car.

    so hopefully it is just the dirt.
    be interested to see how things go

    Mate - don't paint aluminium (or any) radiators - will only slow down heat transfer. Your viscous hub was the main problem.

    I fitted a coupling from an XF Falcon. Trimmed the blades to 360 mm dia and have had no problems at all in18 months. Whole lot cost me $50 (from a wrecker). Coupling screws straight on.

    To trim the blades I made a template, marked the blades and used a jigsaw to cut. Then rasped all the edges to make a smooth finish.

    Very happy partially with the price.

    Hi Chris, after going through the cooling system - radiator, viscous coupling etc

    Check the cap on the radiator fill bottle. If the system pressure is too low the water will boil at a lower temperature. Also check the hose on the suction side of the pump. I have heard of these collapsing and starving the pump of water. Next - check the fins of the water pump impeller - these corrode. If all of these are OK - Head Gasket, cracked head or warped block.
