    low range on bitumen?

Defender 300tdi towing 1800 kg van tare:

If I am going up (or down for that matter) steep hills on bitumen, can I go into low range? I realise I would never lock the diff but is low range ok? I supposed that's why you have the ability to go low range without locking the diff. Also, re: the vehicle's 3.5 ton rating, surely it'd never pull that weight without going into low? I know this might be a dumb question to some, but I'd appreciate advice.

    cheers

Yes you can use low range fine, as you say just dont lock the centre diff.

I have towed 3500kg+ in a number of LR's and have never used low range on the road as far as I can recall.

ETA actually I have , I got stuck on teh M25 round london towing for about 3 hours doing about 2kmh!! low range saved my life then!!

    Cheers

I suppose you could. Bare in mind that low range 4 is getting very busy at 40k if I remember so it would only be of use for really low speed stuff. I think you can change low to high on the roll so it might be useful for starting off. I think High to low can be tricky though.

yep no problems at all..............except when you forget the next morning thats its still in low range and you take as you do for 1st gear high range

i use it everytime i reverse my caravan over the gutter, save riding the clutch

my mate has a 100 series and hate sit that he can not engage low without 4wd activating

I towed lots with the disco 300Tdi. I actually bent the hayman reese tongue on mine, towing tandem with a tonne of camping gear and a 40 series cruiser on the back. They reakky are a fantastic little motor.

On steep hills I would start off in low and work through to 4th before double de-clutching and dropping into 2nd high. I was able to get a smooth transition 3 out of 4 times . The owners manual actually says you can do that. Just have to really feel the gears, and let the transfer fall in by itself. I did that many times too save clutch wear. Mechanic's disco has done 250000k's and he does it all the time. Just a bit tricky to get right 100% of the time.

I have heard that the defender has a better linkage for the transfer shifter and is considerably easier. Just be gentle and patient.

thanks guys - am going from 1400 to 1700+ kgs tare and was a bit wary of the extra weight bearing in mind all the rest of the gear that goes in on top of that. It doesn't get up the hills like a Disco, for instance, but not too bad -I can usually keep above 50/60kph on a decent road with a big long hill. I put diesel/gas (EcoShot) on 6 months ago which improved things a fair bit. Funny thing is, I was coming down a steep one between Walcha and Gloucester (Thunderbolts Way) and boy, I was struggling to hold it in 2nd high and had to drop into 1st now and then. There was a bit of a queue behind me although I pulled in for them a couple of times. It only occurred to me afterwards that I use low to get the bloody thing (camper) up the driveway. I reckon 2nd low wouldn've done me nicely.

    duh

Maybe I'll try 4th Low and see how it goes esp if there's not much traffic about.

Mine is a TD5 but I have towed a pantec out of a drain ditch on the freeway. He also had a tripple caravan hooked up when he bottomed out on his towbar. That would have easily been 20 ton.

If you are putting lots of power through low range ( hill start with a heavy trailer, plus rushed gear change ) , I reckon it would be best to lock the center diff, and avoid cornering. This will prevent all drive going through the weakest axle, and twisting it off

    Been there, done that
