I had the terminal on my starter motor crack around the base so there are other causes ! 12.1 v you would think it would still turn.
the wife tried to go to gym tonight and the disco just gave a groan
dash lights come on ,but wont turn over.....first time have ever had a td5 not start
checked battery voltage,12.1 volts, original battery so presume it is stuffed.
any ideas which battery to get,and will battery terminals fit on new battery without any mods?
maybe i will jump it tommorow,& check voltage to see if alternator is charging
correctly
any ideas would be helpful
thanks
cheers

I think the fact it reads 12.1v is a red herring.
I had a battery split a while back, and that still read 12.2v I think, and had absoloutley no power atall, beyond dash lights.
Yea the battery could have colapsed. You need a multimeter to check it still has power when you put it under load.
put your meter on ,turn on high beam (spotties if you have them) the ignition and the aircon blower fan.
watch what happens to the voltage when the glow plug light goes out
if you get anything under 11.5 on the battery with the glow plugs on and all of that load you dont have enough to crank it...
If your meter has a minimum voltage hold function turn that on and then key the starter.

I had the same thing recently. miles from anywhere. Checked the terminals which were loose, tried to tighten them, still no go - tried it after putting it in park - you beauty, off we went!
thanks guys
first thing i checked were the battery terminals,& as i thought all ok,good as new.
checked the battery voltage with a load but not starter & it is down at 11.1,turn starter & it it jumps to around 5 to 6 volts
so tomorrows plan is...wife has spare van.....(she will realise how nice the disco realy is to drive)
take battery to battery place & get it checked,if its stuffed get a new one
if its not stuffed,just flat,fit back into car after charging,take car to landrover specialist(not dealer),probably M R
looked in the car manual & it talks about the indicater light on the battery....should be green, mine is black, which means needs charge...this is probably a guide only
I think what I had is similar. For a while it was being just hard to start then one day Turned the key to first pos all lights and bells come on. Turn to start and everything dies.
Turned out the starter motor was nackered, drew so much power that the computer was not getting any. Tryed a dedicated earth, worked for a few days.
Conected the Comp to the Aux batt, started no dramas, but the Comp ended up killing the Aux batt.
Total replaced to find the starter,
crank sensor,
glow plugs,
main batt and
then the starter.

sounds like just a dead battery, it would read around 10.5 or so if it had a failed cell. Check that the fluid in battery is full -if its a sealed battery then it should have an indicator for charge.
In my opinion the best battery for 4x4 is the very expensive Optima battery but very powerful and no maintenance.
