    diffs diffs glorious diffs

me again got a question that troubles the best of the boys here where i am so i thought i may bring it up with people that really know pommie stuff
i have a 1984 range rover highline with standard open diffs front and rear 10 spline axles and single x shaft so thats 2 planetaries and 2 sun gears now apparently the axles are ment to be the weak link in these things so my question is why have i destroyed 18 diffs and only 1 axle??? what modifications can i do to make these things stronger its got to the point where i can change a rear diff in 20 mins and a front one in 45mins many people have told me to change over to nissan gq patrol diffs but there is alot of mucking around with welding mounts etc and i priced a patrol centre with not much change from $1000 where i can source a rr diff for anything between $100 and $300 i use fully sinthetic penrite oil in them that was one suggestion i heard and i admit they lasted longer but still blow after a bit. Can anyone please help me ????

If you're blowing that many diffs then an upgrade sounds like it will make economic sense.

Have you thought about fitting a locker? These wont break through the centre. The hemisphere is stronger, the centre gears are stronger and there are 4x planetary gears instead of 2.

After that you will be breaking axles but with the locker you can also run 24 spline which are stronger at the rear at least.
    Cheers

I'm surprised there are no CV joints broken.
Suggest you look at Jacmac, even at $80.00 a diff you've gone thru it would have been cheaper to have installed them first up.
I'm not even going to ask what size tyres you are running- I can guess.

Are you breaking diff centres of CW&Ps?

What size tyres? what sort of driving?

A common problem with the diff centres is the cross shaft (that the spider/pinion gears run on), will spin, and eventually the circlip will wear away or fall off...

the right foot appears to have a limiting factor on your economic situation and any differential or drive shaft or axle is prone to the same disease caused by the big right foot.
previous cases of this have been helped theraputically by repeated doses of watching mike and mal 'buggering land rover diffs' or by the other name 'travelling allover the countryside until mike buggered the diff' don't forget to watch out for special appearances of mike or mal's wife's tits.

My self I would be looking at a Detroit Tru track, as I have one in my 96 Disco. And I would also go for 24spline axels to give you more surface area contact. Also you don't need to worry about the extra cost for operating the locker. I know of people still blowing lockers. Mind you we should not have been there but I still got through.
