The pipe that long would balloon....
I am about to replace all the hoses in my defender and want to know why I have to have an elbow then a piece of pipe and then a straight bit to the intercooler. Why can't I buy a single piece of silicon hose and run it?.Is there any reason for having three bits instead of one?. Pat

you can if you want but a, think of the cost and b the longer you make a hose fitting the more prone to swelling and rupture problems it becomes...
It would look a lot nicer tho and would have less joints and every joint in a pressure system is a potential problem.
as to what would cause a problem first the jury is out.

What are the benifits of fitting silicon hose??

I was thinking out loud as it does make sense to have one bit of pipe.Would the pressure be high enough to cause it to balloon and what is the downside to that?. Pat
Minor issue for some but cost would be the manjor driver to using a combination of silicone hose and metal pipe instead of silicone hose alone.
Swelling/balloning?? the hose will be reinforced in the same manner if it is long or short so swelling is just as likely. Balloning? well I can see the hose expanding more over a longer length than if fixed to a solid pipe only a few centimetres away but if the hose is going to ballon it probably needs replacing.
Another minor point is that silicone will be an insulator and metal a conductor to heat. Some heat loss/gain will occur at a metal pipe where that will not be possible on a hose alone.
The major driver I belive to be cost.
As others have said - cost!
Pat - I went the other way - made most of the pipework from metal tube (mandrel bends, etc) then just used silicone hump hose connectors to join them up.
Mandrel bends have more radius than silicone elbows. Should improve flow if you can fit them in.
FYI - a hump hose connector looks like this:
I got mine from engine protection equipt. Norma rd. Myaree.
silicon hangs together better than the rubber and is less prone to oil softening.

Isuzurover I was going to replace the original pipe with a mandrel bent one but no one in Kal can do it,that is one of the reasons for going to a straight silicon hose option. Pat
In the real world... nothing!
If theres nothing wrong with your existing rubbers, leave them as they are. If they are knackered, replace them with either genuine rubber or silicone depending on local cost.
Sure the silicone stuff is less prone to the effect of oil and there is an argument to say that they can give you a performance gain. But in reality that performance gain comes not from the silicone hose, but from the fact that OLD rubber is more fatigued and so will balloon more than a new silicone/ new rubber. Also, on the older Tdi engines the one of the solid pipes had a restriction in it, the performance boys "silicone kits" replaced this with a straight through pipe. All very small gains that add upto a benefit, but in reality not really noticable when sat behind the wheel.
