    TD5 Experts?

    Hi All!

A quick question relative to a newly installed TD5 (we don't have but a few here in the States)
In the LR Manual it states that the Mass Airflow sensor is only used to calculate information for and operate the EGR system.
It states that the Manifold Air Pressure sensor is used to calculate fuel delivery, air spped and density as well as temperature. All the goodness that makes the engine run well.
If this is the case the engine (without EGR) would not need the MAF at all.

This makes some sense as many injected vehicles run on one or the other. MAP is usually considered the one to have for performance if I recall.

Can anyone tell me if this is true or an over simplification in the Manual?

    Thanks !

    G'day mate,
I recently suspected that my MAF sensor was not working properly as my fuel consumption was getting worse, so i invested in a new MAF. Performance increaed noticably, along with fuel consumption and my auto box changed gears alot smoother and quicker.

I removed my EGR valve ages ago so the MAF is directly influencing all of the above. Having said that, rave also states that the TD5 will operate without the MAF (or with a faulty unit), the ECU just uses a default setting.

    Hope that helps,

    Cheers, Phill

    Hi Keith,

As Phill says the TD5 will operate without the Air Flow meter, the ECU just uses a default setting. In actual fact the TD5 will run with most of the sensors diconnected.

    Cheers
    Pete.

What Pete says is true Keith, but it won't run efficiently without the MAF connected. Contrary to what the manual states it does alter/upset fuelling as it works in conjunction with the ambient air sensor to calculate ACTUAL incoming air density and volume as an ECU input. Yes, it is primarily there to aid in EGR operation, but it is also a critical input for proper fuelling.

The default setting is there to get you home, in default mode the emmisions are horrendous, and the vehicle suffers from poor performance.

Why aren't there too many Td5's over there? Some states only allow them in? I would've thought they would be more popular than a V8 due to the chipped ones having more go and the fuel consumption being pretty good. Or is it that they are too dirty still to meet emission laws?

I have found that they will run better with the MAF unplugged than with a faulty one still connected. I also think that LR changed from basically only using the MAF for EGR purposes on the early ecus to include other fueling functions in the later ecus (I've had vehicles with both ecus and disconnecting the MAF produced different results) and that the manual was never updated to reflect the changes. But there are other instances in the manual with incorrect information, perhaps stemming from differences between design and implementation.

Thats quite common I think with ecu controlled cars. a default signal is generally better than one that makes no sense to the ecu
